I was recently reading The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and i thought i'd share it with you.
I think Holmes's deduction powers are amazing. I never read how many years of practice it took him. But that he should have an amazing brother, Mycroft, as well! (Introduced the The Greek Interpreter.) (19th century names in England are somewhat different from today's. )
I think he certainly earned his place as the top fictional detective.
The Final Problem was a good story. In it, Holmes figures out who is behind half of the crime in London - Professor Moriarty. He gets Moriarty's gang into a trap, but Moriarty himself escapes! He follows Holmes and Watson to Scotland, where in a cliffside struggle, the two geniuses fall into the falls... and die.
Or so the author intended. But by public demand, Holmes came back to life (he had been hiding and disguised) for more cases!

Love those stories
Haven't read any of the novels though, never finished A Study in Scarlet
Today the school librarian made a reference to it and I didn't get it
I felt very ashamed
