Lol I remember watching G1 with my sister, like years ago. While not being exaggeratedly girly like G3(.5), it still felt a bit odd to watch. Girls were clearly the target audience of the show, though a different kind of girly, "girly but not lame" like Faust intended in FiM (she said something like this in dA), which in the end created an all-audiences show.

It's only rumoured. Most of the concept art for a ruined ponyville look really depressing and would fit into an episode of TWD than MLP.
