Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

Several people have already translated various Scratch resource materials such as the Scratch Cards, Reference Guide and Getting Started Guide into other languages.

Some of these translated materials are available here:
http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Languages

If you know of any other translated materials, please post them to this forum so we may add them to that website.

In the meantime, we are working on ways to make translating the various Scratch printed materials easier. Please let us know if you have any ideas!

Scratch on!

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

Hi there  smile
Probably Andrés already told you that I translated the Scratch Getting Started into German and French. My French version might be full of mistakes since I my French isn't that good... So, if you know somebody who perfectly speaks French, would you ask this person to correct the material I translated? (also the French version of ScratchR?)
(or is there someone around who would like to do this job?)

Today I got the rest of the layout files for the Scratch Cards. If I have enough time, I will translate them in German and French as well. Remaking all the screenshots takes most of the time, I guess. Moreover, I had a lot of problems with the text layers in the Scratchcards. I wasn't able to edit the text (since each character had its own path...), so I had to create new text boxes... I don't know if this is my fault or if something broke somewhere else...

We should think about how we include all this new material in the ScratchR-website... It would be really nice if we had some kind of wiki. In a wiki, we could publish materials, we could discuss how to translate new text strings in Scratch, each member would have the chance to write a little bit about himself on a personal page and so on.
I got the impression that the forum gets more and more too messy...
What do you think about that?

Many regards from Switzerland

Kevin Caluser

P.S. I translated the FAQ into German (French is coming soon). You can look at them in the German section of this forum. It was rather hard to do that since there is a FAQ forum and a FAQ-page...

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

I agree to Kevins (catze) suggestion that a "kind of Wicki" would help us much more than just a forum:
We made much bothering agreements here to keep overview
e.G.
* To use the forum for introducing everybody themself (you can't do that on your "mys stuff" page until now) we tell people "don't answer here but in an other Thread, because this thread should hold only one post per person, to keep the overview"
* To make a FAQ we use the first post of the FAQ-thread, that holds the "real FAQ" and use the responds for collecting other information, that the person who started the FAQ-thread should collect and put it in his first post (That only this person can edit)

..there are much more problems if you don't have a Wicki but only a forum

Like Kevin said translating and making documentation would be much easier in a community with a Wicki. The german language Scratcher made good experience with a "writeboard"" (kind of a "one-page wicki") when translating the Scratch 1.2 PO-file.
We would like to do that with the ScratchR PO-File (that Kevin started to translate), too.

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

I think that a Scratch documentation wiki is a great idea.

It would provide a much better place to put FAQ information, Scratch secrets, and tutorials than these forums do, since the forums are hard to search and information is spread out over many different messages and threads.

A wiki would allow keeping similar ideas together and amplifying them with pictures and projects.

The Forums would still be useful as a place to ask questions, discuss potential new features, and have social interaction, but many of the questions could be answered with a quick link to the appropriate Wiki article.  When a new question comes up, it could trigger someone to write a new wiki article, or at least add a new example to an existing article.

Having some tutorials in the wiki would also help with the frequent question "how do I write a game in Scratch?"

We have a lot of talented people (adults, teens, and children) contributing to the forums now, so I think that there is the critical mass needed to keep a wiki alive.

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

I am testing a wiki called Deki Wiki. It has a very easy to use WYSIWYG interface. I haven't had the time to play with it that much but I am planning to move all the static pages such as http://scratch.mit.edu/pages/languages and others like that to the Wiki. Go to the Deki Wiki to learn more about it and let me know what you think :-)

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

DekiWiki really seems to be a good idea. It seems to have a usable WYSISYG-Editor and the usual Wiki syntax doesn't seem to be important in this Wiki (so all those you don't have Wiki-experiences will contribute).
Andrés, do you think about integrating the wiki in the rest of this page or will you make an independent wiki which doesn't have (for example) the Scratch header?
Could user with a ScratchR-account automatically get a wiki-account?

I'm convinced, the idea with the wiki is great and should have high importance!!!!!

Thank you Abdulrahman!  I will post these on the Scratch in Many Languages page.

We are currently talking to someone about translating the Scratch interface to Arabic, would you be interested in helping out with this effort?

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great feedback so far.

We do plan to try a Wiki solution to meet the growing demands for hosting and sharing Scratch support materials.

All of the issues you have raised are great points:
- alleviating the burden on the forums to host things like FAQs
- easier ways to discuss/post translations
- easier ways to contribute translated materials and websites

Before launching a full Wiki, we need to figure out ways to make the Wiki safe for everyone to use.

Which parts would be moderated?
Which parts would be open to all?
How would we deal with spam?

Now that Scratch1.2.1 is released, we are ready to discuss the idea of a full support Wiki.

Please keep proposing ideas if you have them!
I'll get back to individual posts soon.

Thanks  smile
Evelyn

Considering helping in translating the Scratch interface into Arabic, that will be actually an honor for me, and I'll do my best in that. So, I'm waiting the details...

The links I have provided above can now be reached from a single page, which contains a simple introduction to Scratch in Arabic, and that's where I'll add more materials in the future.

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

I think it is important to plan what we want to provide on the wiki. What about creating some kind of "table of contents"

Do you guys from the MIT already have some ideas what you will put in the wiki?
Probably you could start with the same settings as Wikipedia (everbody can read and write everything). When you see that it doesn't work, you can easyily change the settings.
Or like this: everyone can write but the changes are waiting for a moderator to be released... The moderator can decide if a change to a wiki entry is published or not. Like in some guestbooks...

I looked at my po-file for the website and it showed me 1061 text strings... About 334 strings belong to the pages (ans some of them are really long)... Noone wants to translate so many strings... The Scratch-file contains about 500 strings... That takes some time as well, but the strings are short! So, I'm really, really really looking forward to the wiki!!!!

Re: Translating the Scratch Resource Materials

I looked into the source materials in both Illustrator and Fireworks, and unfortunately almost all text is non-editable because bitmaps and traced fonts are used.

In Europe mulitlingual designs are approached with the "Layers" available in most design packages, you simply show/hide several layers with text for each language.

English designers should be aware that other languages might add up to 30% to the length of texts. as English is quite terse.

Due to the use of bitmaps, and also because the fonts used are not documented in the  materials, it is not a trivial thing to translate them.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for offering us your translated Scratch materials.
We have just set up a new wiki on the website where people can upload documents and web links to Scratch resources in other languages.

Your PDF file would be perfect for inclusion on this wiki page:
http://scratch.wik.is/Support/In_many_languages/Nederlands_%2f%2f_Dutch

However, right now the wiki is closed to editors as we are in a beta phase with the wiki.
If you would like, you can email the PDF file directly to me at evhan55@gmail.com, and I will upload it to the wiki for you.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Also, we will keep everyone updated once the wiki is open to edits by all.

Thanks again,
Evelyn
