Coment rating system?

I want a system of thumbs up or thumbs down-ing comments.

If a comment has 15 thumb downs, it will be hidden with an option to show it.

If a comment has 30+ thumb downs, it will be removed altogether.

The three comments with the most thumb ups will be on top.

We can make clever jokes or awesome remarks, all in the name of good fun.

Please read this until the end, because at some point, you will get a clue on the mystery, what mystery you may ask? Well, you will find the answer in the beginning, if you miss it, read it again, maybe you will find my treasure, who knows, it's hidden in the middle, you wanna know where in the middle it is? Check the end.

Why

I think this could be a good idea. I would only like to have thumbs-ups though, as negative ratings could potentially insult someone and could be abused.

Thats true, but its not like someone's got 30 alternate accounts to use, or 30 friends who would join him/her just to remove one lousy comment.

Also it just came to me that this will probably not get accepted since a rating for each of probably millions of comments would take up a load of space.

I mean having thumb downs for spam, or hate.

Actually, spam or hate should be flagged right away so they could be removed instead of depending on a rating system to be removed. I'm not a fan of relying on a thumbs down system since the current flag system in place right now helps to prevent bad flagging by keeping track of who flags what.

Thumbs up would be interesting, though.

Re: Coment rating system?

thumbs up is a good idea but thumbs down is not, if you think it's a mean comment, don't put a thumbs down, just flag it.

+1 for thumbs up, -1 for thumbs down.  I know some places like Khan Academy use it, but it could get abused here.

It would not take up a lot of space because all there is on the screen that wasn't there before are a small thumb up, thumb down button next to each comment. If that takes up a lot of space, then I am the ambassador of the moon.

I believe "space" refers to filesize here - data records of ratings would have to be kept somewhere, after all.

Well, it's just one extra number in the comment database...

And counting. Hundreds of thousands of comments are made each month, so the number of comments on the site is very likely to explode in the next few years of so considering Scratch's popularity in the academic world.

We're talking about MIT here, I'm almost positive they have enough space, because it is a computer center.

Actually, MIT is a private research university. Servers are expensive, and Scratch is not the only MIT website encompassing the entire server space.
