Chapter Four
After the basics were taught to him, Wolfpaw stumbled back to camp alongside Emeraldstreak, positively exhausted. On the way, Wolfpaw stopped at a puddle that formed in a paw print. He called, “Emeraldstreak, I’ll catch up in just a moment!” And heard something from her that he didn’t catch. Turning back to the pool, he ducked down and lapped at it a little; But something was strange about this footprint. He fell on his side and let out a screech that caused cats to come rushing over. He couldn’t make out who it was, as his vision was getting dimmer and dimmer; Then it all went black.
Wolfpaw opened his eyes to find himself in the medicine cat’s den. Looking around, he spotted a starry warrior. The same starry warrior from his dream of the full moon! She stepped closer to him and whispered, “Silver is the end…” And Wolfpaw woke up to the medicine cat’s den, Owltalon busily working through herbs. Wolfpaw sighed. “Owltalon? What made me sick?” “I… I don’t know, Wolfpaw.” He stammered. “Let me know if you find out.” And fell back asleep. He opened his eyes to a huge full moon. Looking down at his paws, he gasped. They weren’t his paws! They were much larger and flatter. He looked back up at the moon. Its glow made his eyes lock onto it and stare at it for what could have been moons. At last, he got up and bounded down the hillside to the plains below. Wolfpaw opened his eyes again to total darkness. Looking around, he saw Sunpaw and Owltalon sleeping peacefully in their nests. Slowly, he tried to get to his paws. He couldn’t, as he felt too weak. Instead, he nudged himself closer to the mouth of the den and stared out at a moon that was nearly full. Wolfpaw shivered. Who will come here on the full moon that the StarClan cats were telling him of? What sort of destruction will they do? Settling back down and tucking his tail tightly over his nose, Wolfpaw fell back asleep. This time he saw Sunpaw rushing up to greet that yellow cat, a brown one with yellow flecks sitting beside him. Stepping closer, Sunpaw turned and gazed at him, his expression sorrow. “Wolfpaw,” He begun, “These are my parents, Yellowleaf and Bananaclaw. They died only a few moons ago, you probably wouldn‘t remember them.” He sighed. “But moving on, I have terrible news. Wolfpaw, you’ve been given a terrible curse; a curse that causes you to transform into some sort of half-wolf on the full moon. The change ends at sunrise. I am sorry to give you this news, but there is nothing I can do except help keep it a secret. Other then this, life goes on as normal.” Wolfpaw sat there, stunned. Is this really what was to happen to him? No! I had great plans! he thought sadly. “So I can never be cured?” He asked. “I’m afraid that I do not know of any cures. I have not heard of cats turning to werewolves in how many seasons!” And paced back and forth sadly. “I’m sorry, Wolfpaw. If I ever find a cure, I will tell you. Until then, you will have to deal with this horrible curse. You may wake up now.” “Wait!” Wolfpaw called out, “How will I know that this was really from StarClan?” “You will see sunlight on your paw!” Yellowleaf called. Wolfpaw opened his eyes to see that it was daytime. Instantly looking at his paw, Wolfpaw saw a beam of sunlight falling through a hole in the ceiling above. “So it was more then a dream,” He muttered. Looking to the back of the den, he saw Sunpaw sorting herbs. “Sunpaw!” He called quietly. “Yes?” Sunpaw asked. Wolfpaw gave him a look to see if it was simply a dream or not. Sunpaw hesitated, then nodded. Wolfpaw’s heart sank as he thought about this horrible curse. Hearing a rustle outside, he saw Mudpaw rushing in. “Wolfpaw! I came to visit now because I was out on patrol earlier! Are you okay?” He asked, concerned. “I’m fine, Mudpaw. I just drank some funny rainwater, that’s all. Where’s Mistwhisker?” He asked, changing the subject. “She visited earlier. I think she went hunting now, so-” “Hey! Wolfpaw!” Called a voice outside the den. Wolfpaw saw Thistlepaw racing in, her wings flat on her back. “I heard you talking to Mudpaw! I truly hope you’re okay!” And, running up, she pressed her muzzle into his fur. “I’m fine, Thistlepaw,” He purred, “I just drank some dirty water. I’m fine now,” And staggered to his paws. Wolfpaw’s legs were quite sore at first, but after walking around and stretching them, he felt great. Bounding up to where Rabbittail was discussing plans, Wolfpaw stepped up and asked, “Can I go on patrol with Emraldstreak?” On hearing this, Emraldstreak, who was sitting a little ways away with another warrior named Blossomtail, bounded over, excited. “Wolfpaw! You’re okay!” She meowed happily. “Yeah I am, Emraldstreak! I can go on patrol now!” As okay as I can be, now that I’m cursed, he thought bitterly. “Then you and Emraldstreak can go on a border patrol with Deathfoot over there,” Rabbittail told them, Pointing with his tail to a Black-and-red tom. Bounding over, Wolfpaw yowled, “Deathfoot! Emraldstreak and I are going to come on your patrol, okay?” “Very well,” Deathfoot said calmly, flicking his tail for them to come. As they padded along, Wolfpaw thought about his curse. I’m really a monster on the full moon? What about my future I’ve been planning out? I’m supposed to become Wolfstar! He thought in despair. Why did it have to be ME? I wanted to be the best clan cat ever! Now this will never happen… He was so overcome with being miserable, he hardly noticed that Deathfoot had held up his tail and almost simply brushed past it. “Stop, Wolfpaw!” Emraldstreak growled at him, frustrated. “Do you WANT the whole of ShadowClan coming down on you?” Looking up, Wolfpaw saw the grass rustle. And a patrol of ShadowClan cats padded out. There was ShadowClan’s deputy, Shadowpelt, Greenspots and Downpaw, their newest apprentice, at his sides. “Greetings, Deathfoot, Emraldstreak,” Shadowpelt begun. “Greetings,” Emraldstreak replied, relaxing a little, her gaze curious. “What have you come to speak with us about?” “Have you seen a ShadowClan apprentice?” Shadowpelt asked, “We haven’t seen her in a day,” “Which apprentice?” Deathfoot asked. “A little brown tom named Tunnelpaw. If you find him, please tell us. And it was good seeing you, Emraldstreak. Is this your apprentice?” He went on, “I know that Deathfoot has an apprentice. Has Poppystar given you an apprentice to tell the tales of and mentor?” “Indeed she has, Shadowpelt. And it was good seeing you, too.” “Take care,” Deathfoot told the ShadowClan cats, flicking his tail for the others to come. “You know him?” Wolfpaw asked Emraldstreak while they were padding away. “Yes, yes I do. He was Yellowleaf’s brother, Wolfpaw. And I take it you know who she is? “Yeah!” Wolfpaw told her. She’s been sneaking in my dreams all the time! He thought, frustrated. “Sunpaw told me!” “She died a few moons ago,” Emraldstreak sighed. “It’s hard to believe it’s been that long,” Deathfoot muttered, “She’d be proud of both you and your brother, Emraldstreak.” “You mean that you’re Sunpaw’s brother?” Asked Wolfpaw. “Yes, of course,” Emraldstreak replied, “Did he not tell you?” “No, no he didn’t. It didn’t really matter at the time.” On thinking of Sunpaw, Wolfpaw remembered the curse that the two of them are keeping secret from the rest of the clan. Wolfpaw knew he had to find out some cure. He couldn’t go on his whole life with it! But he couldn’t think of any cure. All he could think of was the terrible full moon that’s only so far ahead.
