This is a tutorial for a card trick I made (watch the performance).
I named the trick "Odd Ones Out"...if you can think of a better name, let me know
OK, here's a few reasons why this trick is good:
-Does not require a special deck of cards
-Does not require a set up (i.e. it can be done at any time with any deck so long as it has 52 cards)
-Most of the trick is math based with an easy-to-remember pattern, making it a very easy trick to learn.
TUTORIAL
First, let the spectator choose a card. I prefer letting them pick from a spread since it puts the cards out of your hands and lets the spectator know that you're not influencing their choice:
(That's a really bad one, but here's a tutorial)
When they choose the card, pick up the rest of the deck (they must still be holding their card, otherwise this will not work). Tell them repeatedly to memorize the card, ask them if they're sure they've got it memorized, let them show it to other people, etc. While doing this, you're going to be doing the only sleight of hand this trick requires. From the front:
it doesn't look like anything...but from the back:
you can see there's something going on. To get this position, all you have to do is slide your pinky slightly under the top card and lift it a little. This creates the illusion that the deck is at a steeper angle than it actually is.
Once you're in this position, you can take their card back, making sure to keep it face down so that you do not know it. Slip the card in the bottom of the break so that it looks like you're putting the card in the center of the deck:
...when you're really just putting it in as the second card from the top:
If you can, throw in a false shuffle here, or shuffle for real while maintaining the top 2 cards.
The hard part is over! Yay! Now you just let math do it's thing. Start dealing out cards into 13 piles. Remember to deal out one to every pile, not four to the first, then four to the second, etc. I would recommend this layout:
[C] [C] [C] [C]
[C] [C] [C] [C]
[C] [C] [C] [C]
[C]
since it will make the next step easier. Once all the cards are dealt out, remove the odd piles:
(X means removed)
[X] [C] [X] [C]
[X] [C] [X] [C]
[X] [C] [X] [C]
[X]
These piles do not contain their card and can be set aside. Next, stack the remaining piles in this order where 1 is the top of the deck and 6 is the bottom:
[X] [1] [X] [2]
[X] [3] [X] [4]
[X] [5] [X] [6]
[X]
Now you're going to repeat the process with the 24 remaining cards:
[C] [C] [C]
[C] [C] [C]
[X] [C] [X]
[C] [X] [C]
[X] [1] [X]
[2] [X] [3]
and again with the remaining 12:
[C] [C] [C]
[X] [C] [X]
[X] [1] [X]
by this point, you only have 4 cards. Deal these into 2 piles and remove the odd one:
[X] [1]
now there's only 2 cards. Deal them out into 2 piles and remove the odd one:
[X] [ ]
The only remaining card is theirs.
Practice the one sleight of hand and then try the trick on someone! Let me know what you think, stories of if the trick worked, suggestions for improvement, etc.
Thanks!

Won't they get suspicious when they see the deck is like twice as thick as normal?
It's good though, I'll have to try it out. :3

I love card tricks, and was quite entertained by this one. The only problem I can see is if a spectator has seen quite a few card tricks, they may be suspicious of the finger in the whole secret used to keep the selected card. Otherwise, great trick.

They can't see the bottom of the deck, they can only see the front edges and the raised card...plus, the move should be over fast enough that they don't have time to investigate. And interesting enough, one time when I did this trick, the spectator thought I had put their card on the bottom, which can easily be disproved

Ah okay, gotcha.

Oh, forgot to mention: If you want to, when dealing you can place the odd cards face up so that the spectator can watch for their card, you can ask them if they saw, etc. Basically, it can help keep the attention of the person since the whole trick is a tad long.

Experienced magicians will know what you're doing.
But the average spectator is MORE ignorant than you think.
ALSO, this topic is the best illustration of why this forum section exists I've seen.

Lol... thanks I guess.

My favourite, is when you take a pack of cards, slice it and tell them to take the middle one, and meanwhile, you see the bottom card of the top half of cards which is in your hands, then take the card back and put it back in the middle, and then shuffle if you like.
Then there are two ways of finishing it, you can look through the cards to find the one you've seen, and choose the one before it.
Or you can shuffle the cards in a way that the chosen card is at the top, and then spread them out on the ground, making sure you know the position of the chosen card. Then tell the person to draw a line through the spread of cards, and then take away the cards that do not contain the chosen card. The last card remaining should be the chosen one.
If done correctly, the second one looks really impressive

The only problem I see with this is all the stuff with the stacks. It kind of drags it out.

That's Why I posted this suggestion:

My trick:
Sneak a peek at the bottom card.
Allow someone to pick card.
Allow them to put card on top of deck and split deck.
Shuffle a just a little, so the cards shouldn't get mixed up
Look for bottom card
Picked card was card below the bottom card.

Way too obvious.

I have more, but they take longer to explain. Including one with the name of the card being written on the side of the deck. And a lot of sleight of hand.

You can do that trick? I've been trying to find tutorials for that!

Or you can just try slip cutting the bottom card to the middle then just pull out their card any way you choose.

Of course you could...but the point of the trick is the reveal, this is the reveal I created.

I haven't TOTALLY gottenthe hang of it, but the general idea is sorta simple. You sort of bait them to take a certain card somehow, and the drawing part is hard. I'll try to find a tutorial on youtube.

You mean a force? That would make the trick really easy... I've seen it done without a force.

Forces are so hilariously easy I love that I can fool people with them. =D

The problem is if you do them enough or do enough tricks on people, they start to catch on...but that takes 4 or 5 times in a row when they're paying attention.

I can't believe I even got someone with the X-force once! That one is just so stupidly obvious.
