Not strange at all. This is a result of poor design!

It may have to do with how many people are on at the same time, or at least that's the reason they gave us when I went to this STEM thing for communications and the Macs we were using crawled along like... Something funny that crawls along.

Anyway I like Windows because I like using Paint Tool SAI (also I don't have any choice).

Haha, did I just read 400 posts of Windows v. Mac? Oh my god I just read 400 posts of Windows v. Mac... on the plus side it convinced me to get Linux Mint!  big_smile
According to my friend Mac only has an OSX interface. It runs on Linux. I'm not sure whether its true or not, but it seems trueish that there's Linux coding somewhere. And he's a total Maccie. He's got an old laptop and his family's just got a new Mac. He's getting a Raspberry Pi for something or other soon (well, coding but I dunno why-I think it's his birthday soon-god, that makes me sound like a bad friend. I'm pretty sure it's his birthday).

OS X doesn't have any "Linux code", but it contains GNU utilities which are required for a functional Linux system. OS X also contains BSD/UNIX code( http://freebsd.org and http://openbsd.org ) The original BSD is no longer developed... AT&T took it down via lawsuit. Anyways, I hope you enjoy mint, and if you have any questions you can contact me as conbot on freenode.

Re: Mac Vs PC

I had a dream last night:
I was at one of my old elementary schools, turning on a brand new MacBook Air. Everything was booting up fine, showing the Apple logo. As a side note it had a screen which the RGB sub pixels were easily visible. I don't know if there is any screen that has that serious of a fault, definitely not something from Apple.when it booted, the bottom of the screen was clearly OSX, then it had a horribly outdated and ugly Windows start bar, like from Windows 95. After a few seconds, it fixed itself to all OSX. However, I then realized that with a three-finger swipe gesture, I could switch between OSX, Windows (the old ugly one), and Ubuntu. O.O

No, standard is 4GB, and although you can upgrade it on the Apple store, I chose to do it myself and bought two 4GB RAM sticks. It only cost me $40 or something. It upgrade was really worth it  smile

Re: Mac Vs PC

Just came up with a concept, wanted to know what people thought of it. A wedge for ultraportables that boosts a ton of features. For one thing, it would have a battery to (theoretically) double the battery life. Unfortunately due to design of the laptops, this would require te he wedge to go off the side and cover up ports. Then I began to think, "what if instead of just extending the ports (just so the wedge didn't block them from use) I routed them into the inside of the wedge?" On the left side of the
MacBook Air, there is the MagSafe (2) port, one USB port, and the headphone jack. The MagSafe would obviously connect to the battery. The headphone jack could possibly be made so that if headphones were plugged in they would work normally, but if not they would power some larger speakers. Then the USB could go to at least a 4G mobile broadband reciever, but if size could be sacrificed (oh no, upping the size to 0.8 inches, the horror) maybe also a USB external hard drive or a CD/DVD drive. The case could be aluminum (like the rest of the Air) with a soft plastic covering on the edge to prevent scratches and ensure a snug fit.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

Also, I wouldn't get a Mac Mini, I would get the iMac because to get a high quality monitor as good as the iMac 21" monitor you'd have to pay at least $300. Then you have to consider that the iMac also has twice as many cores and a much more recent CPU.

The 2GB Memory on the Mac Mini is so bad you'd have to upgrade it straight away.

The graphics on the Mac Mini is integrated, whereas the iMac one is dedicated.

So, for value for money, the iMac wins. I don't know why else you'd get the Mac Mini.

Well, for one, it wouldn't be my main computer so I wouldn't need a ton of RAM (and I could get the $799 version, too). Two, I have a monitor already and I'm quite happy with it.

It seems like most developers who need a cheap Mac to develop for iOS and OSX just use the Mac Mini because it is cheaper. Also, what is confusing you about my post? I'll try to make a 3D model in Blender but I'm still a noob.  tongue

I think I get what you mean now, a dock thingy that adds a little bit to the side of the Macbook (air/pro) that adds more ports (using thunderbolt, you can add hdmi, more audio ports, that kind of thing), and has a built in battery? It is a good idea. I'm not sure I would buy it though, considering the extra weight, and also the fact that the Air has good battery life anyway, but maybe on a 12hour flight it might be very useful  smile

Yes, although I wasn't thinking of using Thunderbolt when I designed it. At first it was just a plan for a battery slice. On most Windows laptops that have an extended battery, there is some sort of port on the bottom of the laptop through which the power flows through. Since MacBooks do not have that port, it is necessary to feed power through the Magsafe (2) port. The extra stuff just came as a later idea for what to do with the other ports that would be blocked by the extension of the side. The concept is basically to have it take advantage of the Air's wedge design, basically a reverse wedge that fits it into a rectangular form factor, like the MacBook pro. That way the features can be added without much added thickness. The battery is one of the thinner parts of the Air, so it would go down the thicker side of the Air and the thinner side of the slice. The speakers would definitely be possible, and I don't know about the CD/DVD drive. If it could fit, it would make the Air into a portable media machine. There would be some weight added, but I would accept a bit more weight to get double the battery life when it's needed. If a quick Google search is to be trusted, it would add an extra pound for the battery alone. Given the case and possible other additions, (better speakers, 4G mobile broadband, [an external hard drive or a CD/DVD drive would add weight and are not really necessary]) I would say that it would add up to about the same 4.5 pounds as the 13" Macbook Pro or the MacBook Pro with retina display. It's not the 3 pound lightness it would have without the slice, but still a very manageable amount. Also, if battery life is all that is needed, the slice can be put in a backpack (1.5 pounds will not really be noticed) and only pulled out once the main battery reaches 10% or so. If thunderbolt progresses an external GPU could be a great addition as well, but would require more work, weight, and heat.

I'm not sure what you mean by a reverse wedge design.

I think just sticking with a battery, extra ports and some nice speakers is enough. An extra drive maybe. Definitely not an optical drive.

Could you do a mockup?

Trying, but I am pretty bad at it... This is what I mean by a reverse wedge design: the MacBook Air is known for it's wedge design, similar to a triangle. That makes an area where another triangle, going in the opposite direction, which would complete it into a rectangle. I was able to make this figure, which shows the wedge design of the Air itself (black lines) and the area the slice could take up to complete a completely normal rectangular form factor (red area).

Why not add a small thing to the side, so that you have access to the power port without using cables, and also so that the whole thing doesn't get thicker  hmm

If all you want to do is waste your life on facebook and find out what crazy thing Alison did last Sunday, i suggest a mac. They don't deserve being capitalized >: D
If you want to run or write programs, i'd suggest Windows.

If you want a computer you can take apart and re-build again the way you like, I'd suggest Linux.

Re: Mac Vs PC

I'd have to disagree. If you want to do some serious programming, especially web programming, get a Mac. There are so many great tools for programming, including Xcode which is free and is the official IDE.

Windows is just as good for Facebook as anything else. There are no official IDEs on Windows except Visual Studio which is not free and definitely isn't open source.

Linux is great for servers, but is a bit inconvenient for everyday use in my opinion. You can always program on it too.

People have this really weird, but common opinion that Macs are for noobs but Macs can do so many advanced things that Windows can't that it's quite obviously not true.

Yes, macs have some pretty good IDEs, but that's not what the majority of the Apple world wants. You'd know if you listened to Kim kommando.

As for windows, it does not come with IDEs because they expect you to not be so lazy and go and download them.

I agree, not much software is made for Linux like computers.

I didn't understand your last paragraph, you said Macs could do stuff Windiws can't. Could you please elaborate? To me, they are simmilar oses, so.

I hope you're not saying that most windows users use windows for programming because that couldn't be further from the truth.

Does Windows have an iLife equivalent for example?

BTW, visual studio is expensive, that was my point.
