*sigh* now it says that i've not installed java

when i do software update, it says that the software is up to date, scratch projects here say otherwise

Sometimes, you need to install Java separately for your web browser.

You can't do that on a Mac (which is what uses Software Update), unfortunately.

I think you can install it for a specific browser (I installed Chrome so long ago I don't remember if I had to install a plugin).
