how to make people think your not a noob

1. get an avatar: i recomend searching google images for the exact picture that you like then save it to a file and then go to your profile right under the first avatar you get you will see a button that says "change picture". then press the button that says "browse" and the find the profile that you saved the picture to and then double-click the picture and the BAM! you've got an avatar.

2. never upload a project two times: if this does happens, just delete one right away because it makes people think that you put no effort in your projects.

3. have a lot of freinds: people think your social and really into scratch if you have a lot of people on your freinds list.

I truly do think that we should not be refuring New Members as "Noobs" because then someone might get offended. Even if you think that it is true remember that scratch is a friendly enviroment.

What the [explicitive deleted] is your problem Scratchx? You've been fighting with Tag4eva in so many places around forums when you know that he is only a new member. If you treat Tag4eva like that now I know what kind of person you are.

Well stop doing that! I've seen all you posts talking to tag4eva and they make him probably feel like [explicitive deleted]. He is a new member and he makes his mistakes but can you stop correcting him every [explicitive deleted] post. Your acting like jerk.

Offtopic: Uhhhh.... Maybe we shouldn't uh... CURSE in the Scratch forums!!!
Sheesh... I saw people on this website who are 5....
Next time try to be less harsh on somebody -_-
(and ScratchX is like a new member too he only joined in May. In fact, Dawnlight, your actually quite new too!)
Now can everybody stop flaming each other and get back on topic?

Ontopic: Nice tips bunbun! Another tip might be to try to not spam your projects on other peoples projects through comments.

At DawnLight: How dare you curse in the forums, especially when you yourself have been known to espouse the idea of respect for other Scratch users. This is not how you talk to another person when you want to reason out, and you bring on the threat of an unnecessary flame war. Shame on you.
------

Now, to get back on topic:
A tip I would give to new users is to not go screaming and ranting and ridiculously spamming to get other users to see his/her project, this is seen as a sign of immaturity and drives everyone away.

I'd actually be careful against the friends thing, having a lot of friends isn't necessarily a sign that you're a big Scratch user: I think going on the forums and intermingling with Scratch community members there is a better way to become involved. Looking over projects and sincerely commenting on them is another good way to get involved in the community.

Does anyone else see something wrong here?

DawnLight has never copiously swore at someone before. And why for something that was not meant to be offending at all?

Whatever happened, Please don't swear on the scratch forums. It goes against the Terms of Use and can can be offensive to a lot of people.

Anyway... let's get back on topic.

Re: how to make people think your not a noob

There is a list of mistakes on this thread:
1. Topic: Instead of how to make people think your not a noob you could name it like Person Unknown: how to get respected on scratch or How to make pepole think you're cool
2. Pointless discussions, offtopics
3. Offensive language. This is the first time when I see the CENSORED stuff.
4. Flame war at the end.

And remember, The MIT created Scratch to be a nice place

Re: how to make people think your not a noob

There is definitately some good information here...buried between the flames  smile

A couple of things - I agree that being a noob is not a bad thing, it is simply a term for a beginner and everybody starts out as one.  On the other hand, it's great to have some tips to help people integrate into the Scratch community faster.

And while I love to see a lively debate as much as the next person...PLEASE keep the tone respectful and make your points without resorting to harsh language.  And for the next person in the thread...please don't quote the harsh language word for word - somebody has to go in to each post and remove it.  So just put [removed] for each word...people will know what you mean.

Thanks everybody, and Scratch On!

I dislike the misuse of the word "noob". "Noob" is slang for "newb", which is short for "newbie". Some people, however, use "noob" as an insult. Badly done.  tongue

I agree, the term "noob" often refers to someone who is new, inexperienced, and the source of many jokes on gaming websites.

now back to the topic, creating quality projects is your best chance.

No, according to urbandictionary.com, a noob, or n00b, is a person who thinks they are totally "1337" and are better than everyone. From urban dictionary, n00b speak:

stFU /../..an, i r teh r0xx0rz liek emin3m, u cna go tO EHLL OR ATLE4St help m3 wit hthIS!!111!!!!!!!1~~1!!``!! LOLLOLOLLOLOLlOoLLOlollLLl u n00b

While a "newb" wants to learn about things, knows that they are not the best and would like to learn more without getting pi$$ed. Again, from UD:

Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage.

Re: how to make people think your not a noob

I don't think noob is offensive. It's like the most used word on the internet and i'm sure most people just ignore it. But you should say newb as that was the original term for a new person. Noob is just the more offensive term of that word to put someone down.

Yeah, just call them a newbie instead of a noob, because some people might think noob is offensive.

A noob isn't always a new member. They could be anyone who does not understand scratch.

Re: how to make people think your not a noob

Scratch isn't the kind of community to call someone a noob in the first place. Sure, on the other forums that I use, it's perfectly acceptable to call someone a noob; but this is a community for showing off your talents, learning, and critiquing other people's projects.

And actually, noob doesn't necessarily just mean someone new to a particular site, it can also mean someone new to forums or the internet in general.

a noob is someone who can be old or new, but they are obnoxious and act hatefully towards people. like this one time, i called a level 60 in rs a noob, cuz of the way he was acting and he was like "UR CALLINGZ ME A NOOB?!? I R LVL 60 OR SOMETHING" lol it was so funny.
a newb is a new-b whos new to somewhere
