This is how the software side of the Technology industry has ended up, so eventually, a large part of the hardware industry will end up like this as well.

Re: The future of the internet and technology as a whole.

But you're forgetting, we used to see the future as the place that would have flying cars.
That never happened. Instead of transportation we focused on communication and computers. Whose to say we don't switch again?

So you're saying we'll have flying cars instead of 3D and Circuit printers? Sounds like a good trade off to me  big_smile

@Paddle2See: That's the article I originally read that got me interested in this. It's a bit out of date though, which was why I wanted to know if there was an update thing.  smile

You could have computers for your head, eyes, feet, lunchbox, etc; in your flying car  smile

Computers and communication have made great leaps in the recent years, but they will similarly be necessary to drive transportation in the future. Code will be everywhere. It would be impossible to have today's aircraft without software that is able to automatically detect problems, stable the aircraft, and ensure that the plane is not going to crash. In, say, a flying car, it would be lunacy to not have well built computers that make sure it does not flip over and go out of control. From the invention of computers, there was never going to be a way to do things without them. They are relatively more compact than a mechanical way of doing things such as stabilizing flying cars, and the power of code means that automatically, for free, with no work, the performance of the device can improve.

This isn't about flying cars.
I just meant, we could change our focus on developments drastically before this stuff happens.
Maybe looking into how we can use the growing Quantum Mechanics research to our advantage.

Nah.

I like my technology the way it currently is, but running faster and better graphics.  smile

Or you could use quantum mechanics to have it faster, better, and] smaller.  smile

We tried banning terrorists from Earth. All that happened was that we wasted billions if not trillions of dollars on a war with no goal. Although in the last four years it has been taking a turn for the better: we moved out of Iraq and have taken down Bin Laden and others.
