The session server (session.minecraft.net) is down due to an exploit found that lets someone log in as anyone if they victim has a Mojang account. They are fixing this.

This is why you can't play SMP right now.

I'm looking to play an SMP server that's Vanilla and doesn't require anything special (like whitelist) to go on. Any suggestions?
I need to know because I haven't played multiplayer outside of Classic yet, and two servers I've tried (namely, Scratch Games, and that PvP one with factions) aren't working.

So you're looking for a non-Bukkit server with no whitelist? And Scratch I'd assume? Good luck.

Bukkit is fine, I mean those ones that try to be as vanilla as possible. I only bought the game last week, I'm not ready for mods yet!
And I think there might be something up with my connection... I'll get some screenshots.

The Keep was vanilla with no whitelist, but they've recently added things because of severe griefing, so a vanilla no whitelist is very rare.

I'm gonna do the UltraHardcore server. 

Apparently, in the new Nodus Update, the clients could hack into migrated Mojang accounts. (If you log in with your email). That is why "Notch" was logging into famous servers. Shortly after, the Nodus clients would use a migrated account that had admin status on the server and destroy the server. That is why the famous servers are all griefed  .

Yeah I met the Nodus creator a while ago and ranted at him for a while at how he'd ruined so many servers. He said he's earned thousands of dollars from it.
