Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

Well, um, okay, seems like there was quite a lengthy discussion/debate going on right here on how to approach the medley recently.  tongue

Yes, as I stated in my main post, we are a tribute band, meaning that the songs we record must sound as close to the original as we possibly can. The only time I'd say we should probably improvise a bit is in the case of advanced technical segments of a song - and, for the most part, the Abbey Road Medley is pretty basic (save for the orchestral sections near the end of the medley), so there's not much need to improvise around it.

I'd say that DIY plays all the electric parts (the lead parts) and jji plays all the acoustic parts (that is, "Polythene Pam" and the intro to "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window").

Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

It's settled then. I play rhythm for the two songs and sing John's vocals.

Have you recorded anything yet? It would be cool if you could post some  smile

I'll record either the guitar, the vocals or both thus weekend. We still haven't got a drummer though have we  hmm

Unfortunately, nobody's replied yet (except for techno stating that he's the polar opposite of a diehard Beatles fan  tongue ). I bumped once again just now - maybe someone will notice it now.

By the way, I listened to the Anthology 2 today on YouTube, and I heard the version of Strawberry Fields Forever you mentioned - it's really quite nice.  smile

@jji - Are you asking if I recorded anything yet? 'Cuz I'm just a manager (who is currently in a hotel room with a lack of instruments).  smile

Yeah, I saw techno's post.  tongue

That version of Strawberry Fields Forever is really amazing. I can't stop listening to it. I even downloaded it from my disk to my iPod, along with the rest of The Beatles' catalogue!

jji probably was asking me if I'd recorded anything. You won't imagine how much of the medley I've completed from Golden Slumbers onwards (I decided to leave aside You Never Give Me Your Money thru She Came In Through The Bathroom Window till later). It's sounding amazing, but once it gets closer to completion, I'll upload.

I've also started on the 'chugging' rhythm guitar that is played on Here Comes the Sun which i should be done with soon.

@All4one, yea I was asking DIY, but why are you in a hotel room? Spreading the word about The Walruses or something?  tongue

Recording the rhythm guitar now, Polythene Pam is pretty hard, and it's hard to get good quality sound, not because the chords are hard, but it's just such a fast piece  tongue

XD Well, you know, we're moving to a new house, and until then, we're in this hotel room. I actually did tell some people about the Walruses, though.  tongue

And yeah, "Polythene Pam" is a difficult piece; and I know that even without any guitar lessons.  tongue  It sort of reminds me of Pete Townshend's riff in The Who's "Pinball Wizard", though maybe it's just a similar tone of guitar.

Do you need an art designer for the cover of the song? I might be able to.

No, not yet. We have much pressing worries such as finding a drummer, and until that's done, this project is far from over.

Why is everyone asking to be an art designer at this stage?  hmm

There are a lot of artists on Scratch, obviously more artists than drummers.

Ok, I've recorded both now, but I'm not sure if I'm happy with them. I'll upload them so tell me if they're good enough.

veggieman001, and I think rufflebee are both drummers, but I'm not sure if either is into the Beatles. I do know veggie is a pretty good drummer too, he auditioned for FC when it just started and eventually decided not to join for some reason.

veggieman expressed he would not like to be a part of this, so he's out of the equation straight away.

Maybe you can contact rufflebee and ask the guy if he can drum for us, since you seem to know him?  smile

Why did veggie quit? Ad I think Ruffle is a she not a he, but if she can drum, then that's fine I guess. Veggie is moderately interested in the Beatles as far as I know.

Yeah, but remember the argument he aroused? He left after that.  tongue

rufflebee is a good find because drummers are rather hard to locate here on Scratch. Techno, ask her if she likes The Beatles. If she says no, please try to convince her in any way possible to join the band for at least this one song.

Aw man... Drummers are really hard to come across on this site. We have to keep going on. Any more contacts?

BTW, a bit off topic, but now that you are online, I shall be uploading a set of songs for Frozen Coco in a little while.

Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

Veggie actually auditioned for drums at one point, but after viewing his discography, I didn't think his voice would match the Beatles' songs well. He winding up becoming the initial engineer for us, but after a brief argument between him and DIY, he decided to quit the band.

Also, I know for a fact from the Misc. days that Ruffle is a huge fan of the Beatles (along with other classic rock bands such as Led Zep, Pink Floyd, etc.) - and I remember her bringing up numerous times that she plays drums, though I'm pretty sure she's inactive nowadays. Also, not to be sexist or anything, but usually, Beatles tribute bands have males in the group other than females, to sound more accuracte to the original Beatles songs.

However, CatPerson (the one who applied for art designer a couple posts up) did apply to the topic I made for seeking drummers, and he regarded the possibility of him applying for drummer as soon as he gets his drum kit back (though I'm not sure how long it will be until he gets it back).

I'll try my best to scavenge all the corners of Scratch to find a feasible drummer for the band.

Meanwhile, I'm glad to hear about your progress on the rhythm guitar parts for the Abbey Road Medley, jji.  big_smile

I don't think the gender of applicants really matter. Also, Ringo only very rarely sang.

If ruffle can be an active member, I think she would be fine. Although if she cannot commit to the band, I guess catguy  would be find as well if he can get his drum kit back.

All4one, can you play any musical instruments at all?

Yeah, I saw CatPerson's post on the drummers' thread. You're right All4one; having all male members in a tribute band is better since each of us can imitate one of The Beatles (or maybe even more, when it comes to choosing who sings which song more accurately). I'm becoming really hopeful that CatPerson will get his drum kit soon and be able to join us shortly. Then I can finish off mixing our first single along with my tracks which should be complete soon.

@jji - I do indeed play instruments, I play piano and can sing sort of like George Harrison - I can also drum a bit. I actually would've applied myself into the band, if it weren't for the lack of a decent recorder (even the one on my phone produces rather staticy recordings). Maybe I'll get a new computer soon (no promises, though) with a better sound recorder.

All you really need is a microphone though. If someone in your family has an iDevice, they usually have pretty decent built in microphones, especially the iPhone 4S, because of Siri.

No, we don't have that, but maybe I can get an improved sound recorder through an app.

Still, we need a drummer, and I unfortunately don't own a drum kit, which would make my membership as a drummer rather unfeasible.  tongue

Yea... if your microphone is ok, Audacity is probably going to get you the best sound. If your microphone is not very good, what recording software you use isn't going to help much.

You can get microphones cheap though, but I guess if you don't have a kit, it won't really matter...

Still thinking of ideas  tongue
