Gamefroot - An interesting alternative to Scratch.

GameFroot
This guy I know has developed this cool new game making engine. It's called GameFroot, and it's built to make 8-bit platformer style games. But with the right knowledge, you can make all types of games with this software.

It's very new, it launched at the beginning of this year. It was developed in Wellington, New Zealand.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2hyl4wl.png

HOW IT WORKS:
You can create a basic map by placing different types of terrain. You are provided with lots of pre-made blocks and tiles, and you also have the ability to create your own stuff. You can also have moving tiles, tiles that can kill you (lava, spikes, etc,) and teleporting tiles.
You can also create a main character to play as. Gamefroot comes with an extensive character editor. With it you can choose skin, hair and eye colour, as well as clothes and accessories. With this character editor you can also make enemies to add to the game.
You can then add points, goals, and whatever you want really.

Most of the initial game creation is very basic. It's made for people who have little or no coding experience. I'm aware that most people on these forums would be able to make a game easily.
That's why Gamefroot comes with an extra coding feature. If you want to add more stuff, you can open the editor panel to add Advanced behaviours. This opens a window  containing... Scratch blocks! Gamefroot has a coding feature almost identical to Scratch's, except the blocks are a bit different. This feature is currently still being developed, but it's very useful for adding a lot more stuff to your game.
Currently the Gamefroot community is very small, but this is changing quickly.

The best part is that everything is done online, there's no download required. All you need to do is login by either creating a Gamefroot account or using your Facebook account.

You can find it at gamefroot.com

Oh neat, a easy game maker that seems to specialize in plat-formers  big_smile

Kind of reminds me of PlayCrafter.

Re: Gamefroot - An interesting alternative to Scratch.

Yeah, for efficiency's sake, this kinds of tools are great.

One thing I found that is a good compromise between ease of use and ability to customize is DAME with Flixel and FlashDevelop. Dame is itself pretty much like this tool, but it only exports files which must be used in conjunction with FlashDevelop and Flixel (or flashpunk).

Here are the urls for the interested
http://dambots.com/dame-editor/
http://www.flashdevelop.org/
http://flixel.org/

The best way to go about things to try out the samples first then change them. I haven't been programming for a long time but I want to use these tools to make something like a 2d version of Pikmen.

I love Gamefroot!  big_smile

I've already made a Terminator-themed side-scroller shooter game today. Here it is!

Not compatible with Android.  sad

It really needs to be though.

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

Meh, it's not really "making" games, it's more of a level designer kind of thing.

Use the properties tool on an item and click on the "Advanced" tab then add advanced characteristics
