Preliminary Version of Scratch 1.4 Available for Testing

Curious about Scratch version 1.4? Willing to test a pre-release version to help us find bugs?

The preliminary version of Scratch 1.4 (officially known as "Scratch 1.4 Release Candidate") is now available at:

    http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Scratch_1.4_Release_Candidate

The final version of Scratch 1.4 is expected at the end of June. It will include improvements to the sample projects, updated translations, and fixes to any major bugs that show up during testing.

If you try this preliminary version, you should update to the final version when it becomes available.

Oooh, I'll be sure to try this out  big_smile

Me and my brother can test it. If we find any bugs we'll e-mail you guys about it (obviously I'll have to tell my brother to tell me about bugs since he doesn't have an E-mail or good English skills).

Re: Preliminary Version of Scratch 1.4 Available for Testing

YES!!

...anyway, I can't wait to try this out. It might take a few minutes to download, but I'll make sure to post my thoughts/any bug reports.

Edit: OK, I just tried it. The new look might be hard to get used to, but it looks more polished and I like how everything is grouped up more. The string handling blocks and "ask" block are going to be used a lot, but for the better.

Overall, it looks good. I haven't found any bugs yet, but then again I haven't really tried its features out. I'll make a simple project with it tomorrow.

The mesh feature will be great, if I can figure out how it works.

Edit 2: Unfortunately, they still haven't fixed the annoying bug in the costumes tab that makes it go to the top of the list every time you edit/copy/delete a costume. I was really hoping that had been fixed, but this is only the beta, right?

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Nice! Is the mesh fixed now? Beta 6.1's is HORRIBLE.

Re: Preliminary Version of Scratch 1.4 Available for Testing

Yes, the experimental "mesh" feature was removed.

The "mesh" feature was a way to connect two (or more) computers running Scratch so that they could communicate. It appeared in one of the beta versions so that we could try it in a workshop session at MIT Scratch Day. It clearly has a lot of potential, but in that version it was also difficult to set up a mesh (e.g. you had to type in raw IP addresses) and some aspects of the communication were confusing.

Networked Scratch has potential, but it needs more work. We will continue to think about it and perhaps it will appear in a future version of Scratch.

I'd love to see the network scratch in later versions. Maybe 1.5?

It is avalable very vaguely in this version. Limited, but vague. It's called Mesh. It seems they've removed it from this version, or I forgot how to access it. Instead, use Chalkmarrow's Snyff: http://scratchconnections.wik.is/User:Chalkmarrow/Snyff

I actually am happy that the Mesh feature was removed because it could of caused new members to quit just because they don't know how to mesh. I am currently testing this version of scratch 1.4 for glitches.

Re: Preliminary Version of Scratch 1.4 Available for Testing

This is without a doubt the best new release of Scratch yet. I love the new interface and the string blocks should help a lot of people. One of my favorite features is the "ask" block, and I particularly like the way it handles a hidden sprite "asking" a question. I'm not really all that disappointed that "mesh" is gone because networking in Scratch has the potential to be something much more intuitive.
Thanks, Scratch Team!
(Possible) Bug:
Right-clicking a block and selecting "help" sets the value of (answer) to an empty string.

Any plans for a Linux version? I was just getting excited about 1.3 on my Ubuntu system and now this! I will try it with Wine, but it will likely have the same sound and timing issues 1.3.1 did.

Ok - I understand.

And I beleive it is better to keep it out some time. But that means we can still give suggestions on it?

And to everyone else who thought it would be really useful, If I am allowed to (John?) I might give out a version of the Scratch beta with networking once I manage to edit out the share button xD. Believe me, it is not as useful as you might think it is.

Same here D:

Oh well, I guess it was just WAY too buggy and/or complex. I'm fine without it - We can always use Chalk's Snyff.  smile

Glitch: If you use the ask feature online and then someone types in too many characters, exceeding the amount that fits the box, characters 'overflow' a little next to the button.

You could install 1.3.1 and replace the image file at /usr/share/scratch/ with the 1.4 one. (I have xubuntu 9.04, it should be the same for ubuntu)
