Error Message PrimitiveFail

One of my students is getting error messages on his scratch project. It was working fine yesterday at the end of class but today it opens with 2 error windows. The screen shows a red rectangle with thin yellow diagonals.

The error messages read:    Message not understood: primitiveFail

I tried to upload the file so you could look at it but received this error message:  Failed: serialization: message not understood: primitiveFail

He is using Scratch 1.3.1 on Windows.  He tried deleting his last few changes but the errors remain.

Re: Error Message PrimitiveFail

Have you tried restarting Scratch? Rebooting? Re-installing Scratch?

Re: Error Message PrimitiveFail

All of the above.  I've also tried opening it on a different computer.  Using Save As, then reopening.

Re: Error Message PrimitiveFail

I've narrowed down the issue more.  The error message pops up when opening the project.  But it appears to be actually from the background of the stage because I can look at everything else, but selecting the stage background generates the error message and the background selections are not visible.

Re: Error Message PrimitiveFail

Have you tried making a new project and using the Import Project option to pull your mis-behaving project into it?  Or exporting all the sprites (but not the background) and importing into another project?

I've never run into the problem you are describing but possibly one of those techniques will let you salvage some of your project and continue working.

Re: Error Message PrimitiveFail

Thanks for the great suggestion.  Importing the project didn't work (the imported one had the same issues as the original) but exporting all the sprites into a new project worked great.  I made a picture of the stage scripts and recreated them in the new project with no problems.  Thanks for answering.

I'm glad you were able to get back to work on the project....and you say you put the same stage scripting on as before and it caused no problems?  So we really don't know what was causing the failure.  Just one of those weird things I guess...

I have never seen anyone report this problem before. Weird! big_smile
