Nice suggestion! Though it might be hard for programer's to do? Anyway, still good idea.

The idea of showing who's online or offline has been suggested before.

As for your first suggestion in regards to your forgetfulness to log off, you could just set your browser to delete the cookies every time you turn off the browser window so you'll automatically log off.
