Scratch 1.4 has been accepted into Debian and Ubuntu!

You can now install Scratch directly from the Debian (Wheezy) or Ubuntu (12.04)  software repositories, using your favorite package manager. This makes it much easier for users of Debian and Ubuntu Linux to install Scratch and get Scratching!

This was made possible with the help of many contributors from the open source software community, but we especially want to thank Miriam Ruiz and Bert Freudenberg.

w00t! And Scratch On!

Edit / Notes: Scratch is only available as a "backport" for Ubuntu 12.04 - so to install it from the software center, you need to make sure you have the backported software repositories enabled. Open Ubuntu Software Center, mouse to the top of the screen and click the Edit Menu and select "Software Sources..." Click the "updates" tab, and make sure the "Unsupported updates (precise-backports)" checkbox is checked.

Re: Scratch 1.4 has been accepted into Debian and Ubuntu!

Using Linux on this machine was just getting impossible (i hate HP), but when i go back there i'll be sure to use the software center. TBH, i was wondering why it wasn't listed when i downloaded it for Ubuntu. Couldn't you have gotten it done just one month earlier?  tongue

Re: Scratch 1.4 has been accepted into Debian and Ubuntu!

I don't have Ubuntu, nor do I have Debian (which I've never heard of)

But for all users of either of these two operating systems that are reading this, have fun Scratching!  smile

Alright! I just have one question. Is it available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, or just 32-bit like before?

Ah, actually - it's up to someone in Fedora to take charge of that! We've released the source code, so packaging shouldn't be that hard. If you know anyone, or would like to file a bug on Fedora to request that someone packages Scratch, please go for it!

TRocket wrote:

Ditto above! Please file a bug to request packaging with opensuse, and include a link to our source code page!

Yep! It works on both! * I'm running it on my 64 bit system right now.

* Alas, there has to be a catch.  smile  The pulseaudio plugin for the Squeak virtual machine, which Scratch runs on, doesn't work on 64 bit systems. So the current package is using an older sound management system plugin called OSS. Recording won't work, and playback is choppy. Hopefully someone can fix the pulse plugin soon, and then it should work better.

Sweet for Debian and Ubuntu users!  big_smile

Won't help or hurt me, but it'll be nice for Scratch to be more compatible with other systems.

Re: Scratch 1.4 has been accepted into Debian and Ubuntu!

I run:

Code:

sudo apt-get update

then:

Code:

sudo apt-get install scratch

then I get an error saying that it can't find the package scratch.

Hmm... are you running Ubuntu 12.04? Are you getting packages from a mirror? The MIT mirror took a long time to update, but when I switched the "Ubuntu US" location, it worked just fine.

Also, you'll need to have backports enabled in software sources (which I think is usually checked by default?)

I checked and the backports source was disabled in software sources. Scratch installed correctly, and ran fine when I opened it, but when I re-sized the window the it flashed white then went black, also the scratch icon does not show in the dash.

Edit: The icon appeared after I restarted, but I still have problems with re-sizing scratch.
