The Real Problem

Scratch is about programming- it is a place where people of all ages can come together as a community and share the common goal of learning, sharing, and helping. However, over the course of many months, there has been a great increase in users overly concerned about popularity and fame. Is that the kind of person you want representing you, a person who lives and dreams in a world of fame and self-centeredness and programs solely for the purpose of gaining popularity?

So the next time you are thinking about spamming or bumping your thread remember that by doing so you are indirectly announcing that you care so much about how many love-its you receive or how much fame you can get. Furthermore, you are saying that you are more important than everyone else, that your fame, happiness, and success at Scratch is far more vital than anybody else's time, project, etc.

Of course, you can feel happy if your project achieves front page, but the front page and popularity should not be the reason why you use Scratch.

Scratch is about learning to program in a friendly community.

Re: The Real Problem

You raise some good points!  I'm pretty sure that everybody wants people to look at their Scratch creations and appreciate the time and effort that went into them and, hopefully, enjoy or learn something from them.  But I think perhaps you are right that we focus too much on the popularity rankings in Scratch.

In the long run, the joy you get mastering a tricky programming concept or learning a new drawing technique, is going to be more meaningful than any number of loveits.

Re: The Real Problem

I agree. I really don't care how many love-its I get, even though everyone hates me and I post projects up and no one views them. I just hang out in the forums.

Sorry for never being on... I'm on Onverse now. So get inside, and Onverse yourself. Cya 'round.

Re: The Real Problem

I think that this is so important to people here because all little kids crave attention. Its kinda like this on newgrounds too but to get frontpage you need to make something really great and at that point to deserve to get recognition.

I feel insulted, mainly because you're right. If the projects already on the frontpage hopelessly outclassed me, though, I would not have such a lust for fame. But all of the "hampster" (they can't even spell their cult's name right) projects kind of madden me: Why, dear genetics, laws of probability, and such, (peanut butter athiest time!)are projects of such poor quality (compared to things that USED to get frontpage) getting so much popularity?! I used to try to tell Doody "No, look. That block goes THERE and it'll work much better." Like s/he ever listened to me, ever. It infuriates me enough so that I actively try to have MY projects recongnized, as I think if people would just plain LOOK at them...! (I apologize if I've offended anybody, but that post was just an extreme exploitation of my current feelings. Delete this if you want, but I do have these opinions.)

Then you're a better Scratcher then anyone who spams threads or bugs and begs for people to love their projects.

Re: The Real Problem

I enjoy getting love its. I like fame, though it can reach a point where it bothers me. I would love for one of my projects to get front page. But I love programming as well.

Though I might sound self-centered, I have to say that my projects are better than the ones that DO make the front page. The projects on the front page are hardly perfect. Some of them aren't even well made.

I don't spam people's projects or the forums. I don't even subtly (and annoyingly) guide users toward my projects like so many users I could mention (this doesn't mean posting links in your signature or anything like that, no offence to the people who do that). Yes, I want recognition. But I don't beg for it.

Scratch is becoming too fame-centered. I agree.

Re: The Real Problem

I think that a user should only have a frontpage project once a month. That would help get rid of superusers. When some one becomes a superuser (AKA popular) even their bad projects get frontpage which takes away the appeal of the frontpage projects in general.

Its kinda annoying to see users whose only goal is to get frontpage but there will always be people like that.

Posting in Show and Tell is great, as long as you remain considerate and don't excessively bump your thread...

Yeah, I think one front page per two weeks to one month would be good. Along with a more diverse front page, some users would spend more time on a great project and get that one on the front page, than create many not-so-good projects.

I found that even though many people post positive comments, they don't actually love the project even if they would. By bugging people to post a love it, it seems users can receive many more love-its...

Maybe a feature where a box appears after clicking comment on a project?

Love it?
Favorite it?

That may reduce the amount of annoying "Please click love it!" posts from those fame-loving users.

Re: The Real Problem

I wouldn't allow projects to be uploaded to the web site if they don't have any scripts.

This is a very important statement, Zelda123—it doesn't matter how famous you are, it is about having fun!
Maybe this should get Stickied?  hmm

Re: The Real Problem

I think that you have made an excellent point here Zelda, people should not upload there games just to make the front page (it will probable be replaced with another project in a couple of days any way). The projects you upload should be informative or a game of some thought, or something to help others. If your project doesn't make it to the front page oh well to bad better luck next time.

Re: The Real Problem

This has been really good to read. Excellent point and people, like me never has had the front page so I would rather a change of new user projects on there and users like me that never get on the front page. Besides, people think being a curator makes them a 'superuser' just doing that and spamming.

Re: The Real Problem

Honestly, I agree with everyone here. But the thing that needs to be shown is there is a difference between posting your projects to be famous, and posting your projects to get the word out. One of my friends KINDA spammed on my project, but it was on her project to help people be aware of what's happening to scratch. So that CAN be okay. But what really annoyed me was when someone commented she was just trying to start drama that wasn't there, just to become famous, it REALLY ticked me off. Mostly because this was my friend, and I KNEW she was being serious.
