How do YOU help keep the forums clean?

As part of a small project of mine, I was wondering how everyday Scratchers help to keep the forums a friendly and clean place, by telling newcomers the DOs and DON'Ts as well as reporting posts.

I find myself frequently reporting SEO spam to get it cleaned up by a moderator. What do you personally do most to help the community?

Re: How do YOU help keep the forums clean?

Go through topics, report for things like "Wrong Forum, should go in blah blah blah because of blah blah blah" or "Spam" or in the case of today "Spam, all posts by user are similar spam, ban"

Report inappropriate or spam topics/posts, and tell users that either their topic isn't in the correct forum or that it doesn't fit in the forums at all.

It's strange that you say this now, when AT just got spammed with about 10 topics of SEO..

Re: How do YOU help keep the forums clean?

I report posts that need to be reported and am friendly to Scratchers that don't understand what they're doing wrong yet.

Yeah, I saw one of them today and reported it too. I didn't know there had been so many though!

Search engine optimisation spam. It's spamming links (often done by bots) to get a site closer to the top of search results in an engine like Google.

It's a technique that works because Google and other search engines base order of results also on popularity, i.e. how many sites link to that site.

Speaking of SEO, does this forum use nofollow on its external links?

I'd guess it's either requesting for a topic to be closed or wrong forum.

I don't think so, and I don't see why they should. Links to other sites can only be made by Scratchers (as opposed to New Scratchers) so should already be spam-free, therefore deserving of that small rank update.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. Guess I was still thinking of the other forum I was on  tongue
