I see tons of Scratch 2.0 questions around the forums (and everywhere for that matter ), so hopefully this will answer lots of questions before they are posted. Also, keep in mind that the Scratch Team may change their minds throughout development and things may differ, but in general, these answers should be correct.
What's the current update on the release of Scratch 2.0? This year?
Yup - this year but not until after early September 2012.
Lightnin wrote:
Later this year - but not in the next two months for sure - longer than that but I don't know how long. But I hope we'll be ready at some point later in this year.
Show/Hide List Blocks?
Yes! It was even shown in the alpha preview but was hard to find as list names were simply shown in the "Hide variable [dropdown]" block.
Lightnin wrote:
Yeah! It's actually already in there (and was when we released the preview), but nobody could find it. So we have to figure out how to make it more clear.
I think it only showed up after you created a normal variable. But the normal variable hide / show block would let you choose lists too.
Will the 2.0 forums have a way to lock some people out of a specific collab thread?
Nope, that's a security problem and isn't really a huge problem now anyways.
Lightnin wrote:
Probably not. When you make things hidden for most people, it makes it hard to have security. But the fact is, most people don't view super mega long collab threads anyway, even though they could
Will there be a way to tell the difference between the original project and it's remixes?
Probably not, although the Scratch Team has thought about the idea. It may be a feature added after 2.0 is released.
Lightnin wrote:
Yeah we've toyed with similar ideas. I'm not sure others on ST felt it was high enough priority, but perhaps after 2.0 is launched.
Will 2.0 cloud variables have a swear word detector of some sort?
Probably, as it is an issue that the Scratch Team knows and cares about.
Lightnin wrote:
Actually, I have a friend here at the lab who is very good at that sort of thing, and has offered to help later in the Summer. So I hope we'll be able to come up with something better than what we currently have!
Will cloud variables be able to connect to other projects?
It's very unlikely, when remixing a project, the cloud variables in the project will probably be reset, or simply unconnected to the same variable in the original project.
Lightnin wrote:
Right now, I don't think we're going to allow multiple projects to connect to the same set of variables.
Will the 2.0 website be similar to Facebook?
Yup, it'll have similar features.
Lightnin wrote:
There are a few more "facebook" like features in the current Alpha of 2.0
Disabling remixing button in 2.0?
Definitely not, Scratch supports remixing, as they believe everything is a remix anyways.
Lightnin wrote:
We think remixing is awesome, and pretty much everything is a remix anyhow (see video on this project). So we definitely won't be disabling download / remixing.
Will there by cloud lists, too?
it is planned, so probably yes.
Lightnin wrote:
It's planned.
New forum for 2.0 website and will it save old data like posts?
Yes, there will be a new and better forum for 2.0. The rumor is that all data will be transfered, but there's a chance that this is incorrect.
Lightnin wrote:
We'll be switching to a new forum system when we make the switch to 2.0.
Will there be selected beta testers soon?
There will be selected beta testers but not for a good while.
Lightnin wrote:
we aren't taking requests to join the testing group. When we are ready for more testers, we will post in announcements (but it'll be a while.) Thanks!
Will there by an upload limit for 2.0 projects?
Nope, there isn't one planned, but there may turn out to be one added later.
Lightnin wrote:
No upload limit has been set yet.
Friends or followers?
Followers, that's what the majority of people wanted and that's what the Alpha version included.
If you find an official answer to a common 2.0 question please reply with it and I'll try and add it.

They may move it to FAQ, since that's what it is. That would be cool!

"It's planned" and "Yes, there will be" are two completely different things. I'm not sure why you made that assumption.

Ugh. Not again.
Now there's going to be more jealousy, more fighting, more leaking, etc.
I got sick of people fighting about the alpha.

I wasn't aware of any of that, must have happened before I was using the site closely. But if thats going to happen, I think they shouldn't offer it at all.

That's what happened with the Alpha Testers.
Ugh.
So...
Annoying....

1. "It's planned" means they plan on doing it, why would they back out of it? And why would they hint that it will be happening when it may not?
2. Don't complain here, talk to the Scratch team about it.

There are a lot of things I can think of that weren't planned, but happened anyways.

That's different, that's when something is added later, this is something that is planned, but may not be added.

I agree - just because something is planned does not mean that it will necessarily appear in the final version. The feature may be too problematic or too complicated to include with the initial release (or even subsequent releases).
This is why I am very hesitant to sticky this topic or give it any more visibility than it is already getting. The development team is actively working on the release and it changes all the time. I'm not sure that having more speculation about the final product is really a benefit to the community.

There are in the current alpha. If you were there when it was open, you might have seen some chat projects. Using cloud lists. Of course, they got trolled horribly... ._.

In general I think when someone publically says that something is planned to happen, they have lots of faith that it will, or else they wouldn't want to risk people being irritated when it didn't happen.
However, I can see where I might have been passing on slightly invalid information - therefor, I have edited my post.

Meh...in the long run I think this would do a lot more good than it would bad, answering lots of questions that people tend to ask over and over again and/or be frustrated by the lack of answers they get.

That's true. You should add this list of planned features to the original post.

Probably, as it is an issue that the Scratch Team knows and cares about.Lightnin wrote:

The problem is that there are many ways to get past this (at least in cloud variables). Example: pretend 'awesome' is a swear word. The cloud list could be encrypted (anywhere from a single letter shift to my encoder-decoder) and the actual chat for example would be displayed in another list.

spelling error! Will there be a way to tell the difference between the original project and it's remixes?
Probably not, although the Scratch Team has thought about the idea. It may be a fature added after 2.0 is released.

But then we can report the project.
