Good start! I recommend moving away from Google Sites as you learn HTML and CSS, but Google is a good place to start.

Thanks! Text based programing languges are a bit hard for me to learn but I'm hoping to get there some day. Since the site is like a blog, I figured Wordpress would be a good next step.

If you are after a proffesional looking website there is no point in building it fromthe ground up in pure HTML and CSS. I suggest get some hosting with a MySQL database and install Wordpress or Drupal (or any other content management software you fancy) and then make your site with a good template. That is what 90% of websites do.

I could do that but I'm not really that concerned about the website being professional and I've heard that MySQL is a pretty difficult language.

MySQL isn't very hard.
It is much simpler than many other languages.
It's almost like English.

With a content management program like wordpress you dont even need to know MySQL as long as you have PHPMyAdmin you can create a database and just tell wordpress the details and it will do the rest... Easy!
