Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

I'm currently listening to the take with the lower volume. Amazing job, jji!

I'll try commenting Necro on one of his projects. If he doesn't reply in a couple of days' time, we may have to find another drummer.

Meanwhile, my thread for finding bassists hasn't been working out too well. I'll try to contact the bassists that try to sign up on Frozen Coco threads.

Too bad my microphone is a wreck, because I find my voice is really suited to George's songs. If jji sings John's songs, and DIY Paul's, maybe Necro will be able to sing George's. I'll also conact him about that.

Also, after we finish the Abbey Road Medley, and start working solely on our first album, I think we'll have to release one of our best tracks on the album as a single.

Thanks.

That's a good idea. There's lots of people on the Frozen Coco topic that seem to have good skills. If necro is contactable and wants to sing George's parts that's fine with me. I'm sorry your microphone is broken.

A single sounds good of our best song in the album sounds good.

Yeah, I've tried contacting Necromaster but he has not replied to me since he said he'd rejoin the band. It's a pity; his electric drum kit sounded of great quality when recorded.

I realised that the bassist thread was not working out well at all. technoguyx is the bassist for Frozen Coco (and though I'm officially pianist, I step in if there are complex bass lines in a song), but he is more into metal and hard rock. I'm definitely not up for taking bass here because I'd rather play a different instrument as I know a range of them (it gets boring playing the same instrument for two bands), plus I have too much on my hands already (remember, I have to juggle Frozen Coco's piano, mixing, bass and some guitar duties while I work with this band).

We did not have many bassists signing up on the Frozen Coco thread and you are unlikely to find any on Take 4 (the thread we are currently using). I do not think that the problem here is a lack of bassists on Scratch, but more rather a shortage of bass players interested in The Beatles. Plus the fact that no one's likely to look at bass tabs for songs when jamming alone; it's not like a guitar where you can play the distinct rhythm/melody of a song.

I'm up for singing Paul's songs, though there's something transcendent about John's voice. No one can match a great voice like John's, though there are some that can come close, and if jji can, that's good. I certainly do not want to have a go at singing his songs!

You know, before I started recording seriously, I used to record all my stuff on a cheap phone. I was stunned by its decent quality. Maybe there is something like that you can use?

The way I think we should go about a single is to release Here Comes the Sun (probably the first release by this band) as soon as I've finished mixing it. Then work on the Abbey Road Medley shall commence (that includes Because and Her Majesty, and although many argue these two aren't part of it, there is a good proportion of them who say the ending anticipatory note of Because is incomplete without being joined up with You Never Give Me Your Money). Then we will have side 2 of Abbey Road complete!

If you are planning on releasing full albums like what you had in mind earlier, then we can begin work on side 1 of Abbey Road, releasing a few of the songs as singles as we complete them. Once we've covered the whole Abbey Road album (I personally think that nearly all the songs in that are some of the best they've ever produced), we can release the whole album. This will take time, but meanwhile the singles will keep the fans interested. Just a suggestion, tell me what you think of it.

A single sounds good of our best song in the album sounds good.

Again, it's unlikely the bass players signing up on the topic are fans of The Beatles at this age of time, however great the band's legacy is. I've seen bands crumble on Scratch and bass players who say they'll join confessing they have little experience. Many have hardly an interest in the sixties' music (I know a lot from my school mates who think that). Part of the success of a band is the interest the individuals put in it. It's going to be really hard to get bassists to play The Beatles' songs if they have never heard them or played them before, seeing the complexity by which Paul plays his bass lines and fills. I'm not saying it's simply an arduous task, nor am I trying to be pessimistic, but one needs a sound understanding of the parts before recording, which'll take time.

All4one, feel free to ask technoguyx; it's worth the shot, since he is very experienced and efficient and when it comes to recordings. I cannot think of another course of action as of yet, but I'll let you know if I think of one.

Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

I guess it would be cool if technoguyx could join, although if he's not interested in The Beatles, it won't really work out...

Maybe we could use some sort of MIDI for now, until we get a decent bassist? As for drumming, we might as well start looking for another drummer to fill in for Necromaster, seeing he is busy.

I'd much rather play bass if I really have to, if we don't find a bassist. I don't fancy using artificially generated sounds. Instead of using a MIDI, we could search for Paul's actual bass tracks in the medley, which are available if you search hard enough, but again, it'd be better if someone actually played it.

As for Techno, he isn't a Beatles fan so it might not work out although we can give it a try.

Necromaster, could you please upload the drum tracks for Here Comes the Sun at least?

Ok, no, but seriously, today I'll notify Necro regarding his lack of updates on the thread. Also, tomorrow, I will post all the sigs we received as possible band logos, and we'll all vote on the best one.

Meanwhile, that's true, DIY - If we count "Because" as part of the medley, we would have recorded all of Side 2! Maybe then we can record Side 1, as you suggested. That would be a huge Scratch accomplishment, to record and release the entire Abbey Road album.  It could be done without too much hassle, as the songs on there are a lot less complex than, say, Sgt. Pepper. This is something we should look to doing after we finish our first album.

No reply from Necro yet. And it probably would've been smart to save Necro's drum part for emergencies...

If Necro doesn't reply by Wednesday, I think we'll (unfortunately) have to find a drummer who has more time on their hands.

Meanwhile, it's that time of year again - The Official Band Logo Choosing Contest!  tongue

I'm about to post all the possible band logos that we've received, and we'll vote amongst ourselves which we feel is the best one.

We have:

jji's logo:

trinary's logo:

Yeah, it feels maddening to know we could have downloaded his drum track. Where did you post to Necromaster? Don't give up hope yet. So long as we can fish out the Here Comes the Sun drum track from him, I'd be satisfied. He definitely doesn't have time to record the entire medley.

I'm strongly up for trinary's logo (obviously) and clearly the tweak I did to it (black on white rendition). It was the idea I had in mind originally and thanks to him, I managed a good version.

Re: The Walruses - A Beatles Tribute Band on Scratch

I see you were considering letting me know about this. I saw the thread when it was just posted and though it was interesting, but as DIY has mentioned, I don't really like the Beatles or sixties music at all.

But still, I wouldn't mind recording a song or two as a stand-up musician while you try to find another bassist, as long as I can find free time for it (I gotta record guitar tracks for Frozen Coco, and rehearse some songs to play a gig with a metal cover band I was invited to. But winter holidays start soon here in Chile, so I'm sure I'll eventually find time for it all  smile  ). Any songs in particular I should check out? What do you plan recording now?

16 minutes? That's just insane.

Which of the two tracks are you guys currently prioritizing? I read DIY is mixing "Here Comes The Sun" after the medley, but it really would be much more convenient (for me) to record Here Comes The Sun first - if I learn it soon I could even have the track done by this Monday. The medley on the other hand would take me way too much time to learn and record.

tongue  Don't worry, I'm pretty sure we're working on Here Comes the Sun right now. We already have jji's guitar parts, and Necro posted his drum parts (which he deleted, and we're trying to persaude him to post it again.  tongue ). So we're pretty close to the final result so far; all we need is a bass part and vocals!

Glad to see you are joining as a stand-in musician.  big_smile  It's funny to see two FC members in this collab!  tongue

I'll link you to a bass tab I found for Here Comes the Sun soon. It'd be great if you could also do the Abbey Road Medley with us, although it is 16 minutes. I have the bass tab for the entire medley too on my computer, so I can link you to that as well.

I'm reluctant to take up the bassist post since the meaning of a collab is gone if I do. Do you think you could learn the medley? It's not that hard really.  smile

I vote for my modified logo of trinary's. In my opinion, the "drop R" looks pretty symbolic of the "drop T" which is an icon of The Beatles.

It's not the difficulty of the song that bothers me - it doesn't sound difficult to play in bass. It's just the sheer duration of the song and the fact that it's pretty much equivalent to learning the 8 or so songs that compose it.

Yeah, the bass lines aren't too difficult. The duration is indeed very long and one is bound to make mistakes when recording the whole thing at a stretch. What you could do though is to record the bass of the nine songs (Because included) separately and then I can mix them all together. You may remember that some Frozen Coco recordings too are initially taken separately and then mixed together. Do you think you can do that? I do not need the bass tracks to the Medley (if you can do so) any time soon. If you can record Here Comes the Sun by Monday (tomorrow) as stated, that will be good so I can get to mixing straight away.
