I see a lot of bit.ly codes. Some of them just are viruses but some are legit. What the heck are they?

bit.ly is a url shortener. Example:
I want to post a 50 character long link in my sig, but I only have 15 characters left. bit.ly or something can convert it to something like bit.ly/evwaij so I can fit in my sig. When you go to it, the link redirects to the long link.
I don't like bit.ly or any other link shortener, they can be viruses, and you have almost no way to check.

With bit.ly, add a + to the end of the URL to see what it links to.

I know, its just that I don't like to use sites that I have never been to before or have a weird(ish) address.
