Problem Downloading sb files

I have started getting a typical error when downloading scratch projects

After downloading till 100% before closing the download I get the error

Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot copy file: Cannot read from secure file or disk

This is not specific to a project. Have tried multiple projects and still faced the same problem. My hard disk also has ample space to download.

Please help

Thanks

Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Hi, Manus.

This sounds like a system and/or browser problem. What version of Windows are you running? What browser? Have you recently changed anything about your system configuration, such as installing some sort of security or anti-virus software?

Does the downloaded project show up on your desktop?

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Dear John

Nothing has changed on my settings. In fact I am able to download other projects from Scratch and even the one created by OldSchooler on Pokemon. They get open successfully in Scratch.

This movie from OldSchooler titled Rock Lee: The Movie is the one which I am unable to download. Yes I can see the movie on my browser. I am using Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6.0. I have  have downloaded several projects with it the same configuration functioning. No Personal Firewall installed.

I request the forum co-ordinator to forward it to the requisite expert if required.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Hi, Manus.

Thanks for the additional details. I'm guessing that you mean this project:

  http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Oldschooler2/61481

That's a large project (8.5 MB), and it took about two minutes to download, even over my fast DSL line. Perhaps on your computer Scratch is trying to open the project before the download was complete. Or possibly the download fails before it is finished due to a network problem. What kind of network connection do you have?

If you have a slow network connection, you could try downloading a few times in hopes that it will eventually be successful. (But make sure the last download is finished before starting the next one.) If that doesn't work, maybe you could download the project on a computer with a faster network connection and then move the file to your own computer.

This project downloads okay for me and another Scratch Team member, but we have fairly fast network connections.

MyRedNeptune, which projects have you had problems downloading? I wonder if they are all large projects like this one.

Thanks for letting us know about this problem. Andres and I are looking into it. Let us know if you find out any more.

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Dear John

Thanks for the response. I am using a 300 kbps connection and it is stable.

I have tried this about 15 times in the last week and everytime the same result.

Best Regards

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Hi, Manus.

15 times--how frustrating! At 300 kbps that project should take around 4 minutes to download, or perhaps a bit longer.

People sometimes have trouble downloading the Scratch installer, which is about four times as large as that project. We have never managed to track down the problem, but it does seem to have something to do with our network and/or server timing out the connection before the file transfer completes. You could be running into the same issue downloading this project. We will try to track it down.

Have you had trouble downloading any other projects?

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

When I googled the error message you reported I got no useful results. John looked in all the error messages Scratch can generate and he didn't find the error. So we are wondering if the error is generated by your browser or by the OS or by Scratch. It would be very useful to see a screenshot of the error. If you could send post it here or send it to scratch-feedback[at]media.mit.edu that would be great!

Re: Problem Downloading sb files

Hi, Manus.

I tried to make our network time out the data transfer by slowing down the data flow programatically. However, even when I made the transfer take 10 minutes, the connection did not time out. That doesn't mean there isn't a problem in our server or networking system, but it does mean that I haven't been able to create a test case that we can use to figure out what is going on.

You could try using a different browser, such as Firefox, to see if that helps.

Meanwhile, if you just want to get that particular project, I put a copy here:

  http://web.media.mit.edu/~jmaloney/scratchtmp/

Just download RockLeeTheMovie.sb. I will leave it up for at least a week.
