Using Mac OS X 10.7. I can't use screenshots (from Grab, the screenshot utility that comes with OS X) as sprites (even after conversion to JPEG). They show up in Scratch but without thumbnails, and I can't import still. HELP!

Well, first of all, you do not want to convert sprites to JPEG. That format automatically compresses images, and while they take up less memory, they look awful. There's no point anyway, since Scratch fully supports PNG and GIF (which don't decrease the quality).
But yes, what you're describing is definitely a glitch. I really don't know what would cause that...
Maybe instead of importing it that way, make a new costume in an existing sprite. Then in the costume editor, click the "Import" button and find it. Then you can just right-click (or control+click) the costume and choose "turn into new sprite". Does that work?

Why don't you just use command-shift-3?
Command-shift-3 takes a picture of the whole screen,
while command-shift-4 lets you crop an area of the screen.
They save onto your desktop as PNGs.
Try importing a PNG that hasn't been taken using Grab, but take one using my method, and tell me if it works.

Grab is the name of the built-in software that takes screenshots when you press those keys.

Nope. That shortcut works for me

No, that doesn't work. And Grab makes TIFF images, (which Scratch doesn't support) not JPEG, PNG, or GIF. So that's why I converted them (I also tried PNG).

Did you make sure that the filename has .jpeg after it? That might fix the problem...

S/he said they converted it to a JPG file.

Maybe Scratch 2.0 shouldn't support .jpg and .jpeg images.
It should support .svg files.
I think the best solution is to use the cmd+shift+4, then press space to select the window you want then save it as PNG.

It will support SVGs.
Did you try other methods of importing? What about just saving, and if that doesn't work, restarting? It could be the DTB's child, the Disappearing Image Bug. (A new bug.)

I mean in the name. Like "picture.jpeg" instead of "picture".
