Re: Windows 8

It is probably gonna turn out like what happened to ubuntu, when gnome changed to unity.

It will be fine in the end.

Re: Windows 8

Might I quote Tim Cook from his latest Apple quarter report conference call about Windows 8?

"Anything can be forced to converge. But the problem is that the products are about tradeoffs. You begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left at the end of the day doesn’t please anyone. You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but you know, those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user."

No, you may not quote the CEO of Apple to describe Microsoft's doings.  Remember the move from Gnome to Unity, as Zeusking19 pointed out?

So opinions of opposing teams don't count?

I think you should at least acknowledge what he has to say.

If that's what Apple thinks, they're hypocrites.

Re: Windows 8

I have the Windows 8 Developer Preview in VBox, but couldn't get the consumer preview working. It appears I'm not the only person that wants a computer to be different than a smartphone. I'm sticking with Windows 7.

Re: Windows 8

You got bsod? Not surprising.

I dual boot the 64bit release preview for personal reasons to do with schoolwork, and it freezes so often and is such a pain to use.

That's why it's a preview.
And it probably works better if not dual-booted.

Interesting how Ubuntu runs fine on a dual-boot, whereas Windows seems to buggy whether it's dual-booted or not. And also, this is the final preview, the release preview, so major bugs should have been fixed.

Re: Windows 8

Windows 8 is the only Windows I can use on my notebook because I formatted my entire hard disk to install Ubuntu, which removed the OEM version of Windows 7 that came pre-installed on the notebook, then I installed Win 8 DP, then I reinstalled my GRUB boot-loader so I can boot into Ubuntu, then I installed Win 8 CP, and now I can't reinstall GRUB for some reason. If I try to install Win 7, I get the BSoD when I try to login. On DP, you can get the old Start Orb back using the Registry Editor, but in CP and above, MS completely removed the old menu.

Re: Windows 8

Yea, I used the registry trick with DP but it doesn't work anymore. Stuck with the ugly metro start menu xD

At least I don't use it every day  smile

And I'm pretty sure you can fix it with a clean install. Wipe your drive, boot from DVD and install.

Lol. I can just wait 'till I get the new Ubuntu from a magazine disc and that will upgrade my Ubuntu and reinstall my boot loader. I can't do that with my current version of Ubuntu because I used the update manager, not a disc.

No really, that's it BSOD.

I got that when I hit the keyboard on my notebook really hard... I probably hit the CPU or RAM directly under the keyboard where I hit it.  tongue  (And I know where that is because I have pulled it apart before.)

Actually, that's not necessarily true.  If Microsoft gets lucky, most of the major bugs will have been fixed by the first update after the full release takes place.  My OS X 10.7 (Lion) Mac STILL has a bunch of really annoying bugs.
