Windows Surface seems to be better built than the majority of android tablets and transformers on the market today. It's definitely a real competitor to the iPad, but I think your info about it being Intel i5 is not right, since there is currently no info on which processor it will use, except that there is an ARM version and a x86 version.

In this debate, we're pretty much just slamming each other now.
It's essentially this:Mac: this is why Windows is bad
PC: this is why you are wrong and Macs are bad
Mac: this is why you are wrong and Windows is bad
...and so on and so forth
This is how I argue with Mac users
Mac: this is why Windows is bad
PC: this is why you are wrong, and they're pretty much the same
Mac: this is why you are wrong and Windows is bad

Still doesn't say anything about a i5 processor
And tell me, how long have you used a Windows PC without rebooting? Even just leaving it overnight? You'll probably find that it is unusably slow, and crashes after a few days, or even days of being left turned on.
Linux and Mac computers can stay on for limitless times, and be just as responsive as just booted.

This is an Ugh!/Yeah! depending on who you are, but Surface, like everything Windows, will come in two flavors. The aforementioned super-skinny variant runs Windows RT on an ARM processor (like the one in your phone, or most other tablets), while the Pro copy runs an Ivy Bridge Core i5 x86 processor, USB 3.0, and other ultrabook-y specs. It'll be a little thicker (13.5mm) and heavier, though not by much. The Pro Surface will be available with either 64 or 128 GB of storage.

Also, I have never had issues with speed slowing down and our computers are left on 24/7. I only reboot when that god-awful windows update thing keeps annoying me. (after I postpone the reboot five times)
@jvvg: oh darn. [/sarcasm] If I paid Apple for the operating system I should be able to do whatever I want with it. (except piracy, breaking international copyright law) What is apple going to do, track me down and sue me? If it turns out that I try (and end up loving) OSX maybe I would be more likely to make my next purchase a Mac.

Well said.
Apple has a very closed approach (more like an oppressive approach) to doing things, doesn't it?

Er... I've left my computer on for weeks at a time and it's not gotten slow or crashy. Dunno what's up with you.

Same with me. I only have to restart my computer about once a month, and that's just because I'm cynical and think something could happen, but nothing ever does.

I restart mine more often nowadays, when switching between Lubuntu and XP

And yet somehow, my netbook from 2 years ago is faster, and not much bigger.

Make that into a Win8/HackOSX dual boot and checkmate, apple.
win8's interface is a fail. hate metro.

Your 2010 netbook has a 461 MB/S read rate? I highly doubt that. 8 gigs of RAM? Nope. Intel Ivy Bridge core i5? Nope, try a suckish Intel Atom processor.
As I have always said, the MacBook Air is epic, I just need to get my hands on 2,000 dollars for a 13" 512GB SSD 8GB RAM model. APPLE. Y U ONLY GIVE 50 DOLLARS EDUCATION DISCOUNT ON A $2,000 COMPUTER???
Edit: except the pre-Ivy Bridge base 11". That was a $1,000 dollar netbook right there, 2GB RAM and 64GB SSD is laughable.

My netbook cost $400 ($600 without education discount), and it has 8GB RAM, a 600GB hard drive, and has a 12" screen.

Based on the specs you gave, that isn't a netbook. Netbooks are typically equipped with the barebones necessary to run the OS; anything with 8 gigs of RAM and at $600 is not a netbook.

I call mine a netbook because of the size. That's not the official title.

You mean like an ultrabook? And no HDD can beat SSD speeds
Plus I'm guessing a 2010 netbook doesn't have Ivy Bridge

However, HDDs are much denser, more reliable, and DO NOT burn out.
What the heck is ivy bridge?

I googled it.
Anyway, my computer has some kind of AMD processor.

HDDs definitely give you better GB/$ but SSDs are actually more reliable (in theory at least) and are definitely faster.
And Ivy Bridge it the current Intel 3rd Generation Core i series processors. The previous was Sandy Bridge and before that who cares it was forever ago
AMD oh yes, I remember you telling me. I like AMD/ATI graphics cards but not their processors.

No, actually. After about 100K write cycles, a SSD will break (search Wikipedia for Flash Memory, and see the section on Memory Wear).

Well, AMD probably still has better integrated graphics than Intel.
Also, why not tell that to my HDD that just crashed. 40GB lost.

Never happened to me. I've had computer problems before, but none of my HDDs have ever broken. Some of my computers are 30 years old, too (my Macintosh SE).
