Yes, the Kindle Fire is $300 less than the iPad, but the iPad is so much better quality and has so many more capabilities, that it's well worth the extra cost.
Just because it isn't as good as the ipad doesn't mean you should dislike it...?

If you are buying a Kindle Fire as an eReader, don't bother. You should buy a Kindle Touch instead.
My daughter has one and it is REALLY nice for reading books.
Of course, it is only black and white, but you don't really need color if you're just reading books. Plus, the battery in it lasts for ever (several weeks) on a single charge and it is very easy on the eyes. I've read with it for 4+ hours at a time and my eyes didn't get tired. Compare that to the Fire and I was only able to read for about an hour before I had to stop.
You have a daughter? That disturbs me because I assume most people on Scratch are kids, but oh well. I guess you're an adult
And yes, the 3G Kindle Touch was definitely an option but I eventually ruled it out because I can use the Kindle Fire as a second monitor for my Mac.
Also, you can hack the Fire

Yes, I have a daughter and she makes Scratch games: http://scratch.mit.edu/users/lizzy_1_year
I got into Scratch because she wanted me to help her with her first game. I found the language/environment fun and started developing my own games.
There has been some comparison on this thread between the Fire and iPad. Well, I've had a Fire and my wife has an iPad. I can tell you that the iPad is great for some stuff but it is completely worthless for Scratch. The iPad doesn't run Java or Flash.

I didn't say it did. I really support Apple, but I recognize that they don't excess at everything.

Though it does add £50 to the price.

I agree with this post; the screens on the non-Fire Kindles are so much better for reading.

Not if you want to read books with colour on them
