Achievements

I think that for the scratch website scratchers should be able to program achievements into their games.  achivements would be little things that give you a higher amount of (scratch points or another name of your choice)  that are similar to gamerscore on the xbox 360.  The purpose of these would be to get a more wide variety of scratch projects shown so that more scratch projects could be viewed and learned from.  it is a great incentive for people to view other games ad to program in cool new ways.  another example of this is the site www.newgrounds.com which did something similar.  the scratch points would not win you anything, they would just be displayed on your account much like gamerscore.  if you are worried about people posting projects with random useless achievements then i have two points.
1. moderators could at first be the ones to try out games with achievements
2. achievements could be limited to a reasonabl number (for example no more than 2 or 3 per project)
3. projects with achievements could not be posted to close together (for example I could not post one project with achievements until 24hours to a week later)

I know it sounds complicated but it seems to be a good idea in the long run
thanks

Re: Achievements

I think this could be abused by people who make fake games that give crazy amounts of points for no effort. Scratch is more programming oriented than game oriented. How about achievements for programming scratch projects?

Hi, I am Archmage coder extraordinaire. I do Scratch, pascal, java, php, html, AS2 and AS3. Leave me a message if you want coding advice. Also check out my personal website, lots of good stuff about web development, Flash, and Scratch (v1 and v2) !

Re: Achievements

thats why each achievement would have the same amount of scratch points, and also scratchers could only post llike 1 game with achivements a week with only 3 achievements.  another easier way that newgrounds does is that the moderators have to ok achievements going with the game.  of course, that is more work so i didn't suggest that at first.  the whole point was to promote the viewing of other peoples projects so that people would be more motivated to share.  people with little or no views don't get very excited abbout scratch, and this is an easy way to make that better.  that was the overall purpose

thats an ok idea, but i think it would be better if projects with a certain number of scripts could do that.  of course, then people would constantly be posting projects, so either way has it's upsides and downsides.

Well, some people make random projects with thousands of useless (when Green Flag clicked) scripts. EXAMPLE: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/jumper200/159068

yah they do do those, but does that really matter?  with all the other things in place who would bother making one project per week with just when green flag clicked.  Here is a simpler idea though.  why not have all the games participating in achivements be looked over by the scratch tema first to avoid this. that way less have achivements and it inspires scratchers to work harder to create better games and to share more.  have you ever noticed how barely any of the joined members post projects.  that's what inspired me to think of this in the first place.  plus gamerscore on the xbox is cool.

But I do think scratch is more for fun and not a place to get awards and stuff. Aren't you happy enough you are apart of the scratch community?

DawnLight "But I do think scratch is more for fun and not a place to get awards and stuff. Re: Achievements

More than giving points I think I'd like the idea of involving more people in different roles. For example, we just added the "curator" role. This is going to rotate and give different people the chance to be a curator. You could imagine having other kinds of roles that would recognize people's contributions and perhaps be an incentive to participate in different ways.

Re: Achievements

why not rethink the whole achievement thing entirely and make it so that if someone has been a scratcher for a year, or two years etc... they get a little thing by their name which is kind of like an achivement.  this will encourage people to stay on scratch longer, and since maybe it would only work if they had been active it would encourage them to share more often
does that seem good?

That's an interesting idea...some recognition of commitment to the site.  Maybe a measure of number of projects...or length of time on the site.  My problem with those is that they may not reflect what you want them to.  Length of time on the site doesn't mean much if you only log on once a year...and rewarding large numbers of projects would just encourage people to upload useless projects.

Some sort of recognition awarded by other Scratch users might work though...keep thinking  smile

Re: Achievements

hmmm.. there are upsides and downsides to everything but how about something like this;
we have little achievements all around scratch to motivate scratchers
these may include

*post a suitable project into the scratch design studio gallery
*join a scratch "company"
*remix someone else's project and try to make it better
*have (# of people) people add you to your their friends list
*suggest another persons project to be featured (if it gets featured u would get this)
*get your project added to (# of people's) favourites
*get (# of love-its) on one project (self love-its wouldnt count, or better yet, love-its from the same IP address wouldn't count

there could be others as well, but these could encourage people to be more active on the scratch website

Re: Achievements

Newgrounds is powered by adobe flash which is a more experienced program, the games made including acheivements are made with flash, there are scratch projects that have acheivments in their for the sake of it (like one of mine, but i did it as a joke). but flash is a more complex program and alows a person to make a game or video with a wider range of tools and such. but, despite my disagreement, i like your ideas

thanks, yes scratch as of now couldn't support the programming of achievements the way newgrounds does, they would just be able to be programmed like you said for the sake of it.  the scratch team would have to edit scratch up a bit in order for something like that to work, which is why i proposed a new idea lol.
