I really want to make a forum, but i'm too scared my mom will say no. Should i ask her? I'm nervous to.

And, if she lets me should i use PunBB?

Well, I don't see what would be so bad about making a forum. Your mom lets you post on forums, right? Otherwise you wouldn't be there. Since she lets you post on them, why wouldn't she let you make them?

That might be the case for a lot of people.
I made a few forums a while back. I think my motivation was that it felt cool to actually be the owner of a forum.

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

well, first off, you don't really need to have forums for yourself, I think that idea is just plain ridiculous.   no offence, people.  Forums for different topics such as TV shows, or for an organization makes sense.  but for a singular person?    Just my opinion...

Also, if you do make forums, don't use punbb-hosting.  You can get ad-free forums by using 000webhost.com and downloading and ftping phpbb3, punbb, or fluxbb.   I recommend phpbb3, but again, it's just my opinion.

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

I think forums are a great way to make a website unique. I put one on my blog, and my views have increased a little. What do you plan on doing with your forum? If it's over a certain topic, tell her that it will allow you to network with like-minded people. In fact, you could tell her that she could make an account and monitor it 24/7.

As to what you should use, I like Nabble forums. They're quick, easy, and look professional. However, I've seen some very impressive PunBB forums. Anyway, if you want to see what Nabble can do, just click on my siggy and go to rewrite forums.  smile

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

Haha, my mum doesn't even know I post here, let alone have my own forums.

777w, when I made mine, I originally just made it to see how forum-y stuff worked from an Admin's view, then it started getting a few users, so I thought "m'kay, maybe I should take this seriously". Now I just use it as a normal forum and to help my PHP knowledge improve. ^^

None of parents know about anything, either. They don't know about my blog, or Scratch, or my various social accounts (all under the alias Joseph Radke, of course). I just think that sometimes parents can get in the way of letting you reach your full potential. It's not like I'm running a hate blog or anything, and my forums posts are generally nice (right?). All the other stuff is to advertise my blog.

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

My parents and Cousins parents all know about what I've made (Eternity Inc and it's website) and they're pretty impressed and fine with it.  And this is coming from the person whose mother didn't want me on the scratch forums for a year because she thought they were unsafe.  I later convinced her that this is provided by MIT, and is an educational website, that I'm pretty sure is safe.  She then took the point, maybe that would help with you.

+1 to all of that.

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

Our parents didn't exactly grow up with the technology that we have today, making them cautious about what they are to let their offspring do while on the internet, a natural thing.  But, there's always that they're older, and they know what is best for us.

and then there's always that...  They're only doing what they think is right, which in effect becomes what is right, because we are minors and must obey the almightly law that is put upon us by the dictator of the country
dictator = parent(s) - I only have one.
country = house, and we are basically a citizen and must do what they say.

not saying I like it, it's simply the way it is.

That is bad...what if you signed up for Community Mod, won, then when confirmation came, what would you do?

no, I'm saying even though they can understand it, they can also be overly cautious at the same time.

Re: Forum help/ Forum Offical topic

You could present it to your mom as something you want to do to help you learn more - like RedRocker said, to improve your PHP knowledge. Or if saying PHP would be too technical, you could say it's something a lot of people your age are doing and learning about and you don't want to get left behind. "This will help me get better grades/get into a better college/get a better job one day" is language all parents understand!  big_smile

or simply saying it's educational!

Hey, i guess if you reassure her by telling that it is really safe, you wont have any problem.
To me, Forumotion is the most secure to create forum because they ban all illegal forums. www.forumotion.com

yes, but they place ads that link to places that can be illegal so that's why I stopped using them.
