had named a background lvl3-2-3, renamed it with lvl3-2-4 and now i cant name another background lvl3-2-3.
WHY ?????

no i cant. it keeps naming it lvl3-2-12.

Because if there are two backgrounds, both called 3-2-3, and you do
set to background 3-2-3
Which one does it change to?

The autonumbering is theoretically useful, but if you get too sick of fighting it, you can just rename everything so it doens't end with numbers. For example instead of "level3" you could use "3rd level", "level three", or even just "level3!"

You have to delete the old background. Otherwise, it will cause confusion when switching backgrounds.
I also sometimes find the auto-numbering annoying.

In Scratch 1.4, if you name a costume "level2" when there isn't a "level1", it'll automatically rename it to "level1". (It won't let you name a costume "slash3" if there isn't a slash1 or slash2.) I'm not sure if this is what's happening, but it's something to keep in mind ^^

Yes, the autonumbering 'feature' in Scratch 1.4 can be annoying.

Adding an underscore (_) to the end also works.

Adding any character to the end works.
If it didn't end in a number, it would work, but because it does, it doesn't. It seems to have a SQL-like AUTO_INCREMENT value, which can't be reset.
Tl;dr: it keeps counting when you have similarly named backgrounds.

thx for your answers ! but i reprogrammed my project , so it will fit the changed numbers.
had to do it anyway, as scratch crashed, just before i clicked save...
