UPDATE FROM THE SCRATCH TEAM:
A linux installer has been posted at http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Linux_Installer
------------------
I posted a tarball of Scratch at www.tcpdpodcast/scratch.html for Linux users. The install is very simple and you can run Scratch from the Terminal or build a launcher for it. Except for Presentation Mode, pretty much everything else works. I'm running SUSE 10 which, imho, is the pickiest distro, so it should work on most versions on Linux. (I'm running GNOME, so KDE folks need to tell me if it works for them.)

That'll be a dot org domain: http://www.tcpdpodcast.org/scratch.html
Many thanks to David (and John for pointing me here).

Many thanks for packaging the Scratch program.
We use your Linux-Scratch package for teaching kids programming at Byteworks http://www.bworks.org/byteworks/index.html
I created an "Installer" script which unzips your package to the user's HOME directory, and creates the shell script to run Scratch. It also creates a Desktop icon on the user's desktop, with the Scratch kitty as the icon
If anyone wants to use it, it's available for download here:
http://www.notesmine.com/scratch_installer (Instructions are on the download page, they're fairly simple)
Please contact me at tookelso@yahoo.com with any bugs/suggestions.

Would it work in Sugar? You know, the One Laptop per Child computer's OS? It's Linux. I just got one for Christmas via the Give One, Get One program.

We just got an XO computer also through the Give-One-Get-One program. Scratch would be a very welcome addition to the machine.

Thanks a lot David! It's working great with Gentoo Linux here!

There's currently an alpha Ubuntu package of Scratch 1.3.1 available on our wiki page.
http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Linux_installer
As you can see from the Known issues, there are some bugs. As soon as Scratch 1.4 is released for Windows and Mac, we'll start working on the 1.4 package for Ubuntu. Once it is finished, it will be available on the page linked to above.

Will there soon be a PowerPC compatible version of Scratch for Linux? I'm running Ubuntu on my mac the i386 program won't work on it, and I don't want to have to reboot to OS X if I want to work in Scratch.
