The occupy flash petition

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/XenoK/2564772  The occupy flash petition is to rid the world of flash.  Also, for even further information that goes farther than the project, visit occupyflash.org.   I have no association with this website, other than I support the movement.

I don't.  It wants me to update it every couple of days, it glitches too much, it crashes on a regular basis, I hate it, and I'm fed up with it!

I'm not a big fan of Flash, but I like JavaScript even less, and unfortunately when people say "HTML5", nine times out of ten they really mean JavaScript.

only facebook, dot.tk, and flash.  If the definition of a lot = 3 things, then yes.  I'm against a lot of things.

Re: The occupy flash petition

I can't say I necessarily approve of this, especially since websites like Newgrounds have nearly 600,000 submissions made in Flash and I've worked in it for 3 years.

so basically,

no, they usually mean HTML5's Canvas feature.

well, it's my opinion.  And you have yours, I respect that.  But I still think it is crippling the internet.  Adobe is not putting it on mobile devices other than android, and it's not nearly as portable as java and javascript is.  Its kind of like dessert.  You don't really need it, but you still have it.  Yet, some people can't because they don't have enough money.  the dessert being flash, the money being devices.

EDIT: I gotta stop talking about dessert.  I'm getting hungry.

Re: The occupy flash petition

Pages take longer to open (typically 2 to 10 times or even more)
The visitors must wait for the intro to complete
A Plug-in must be installed and kept up-to-date
    Animations are impossible to ignore

Many visitors don't even have Flash

    Mobile Users (iPhones, PDA's, ...)
    WebTV users
Members of Schools and Corporations, that block Flash in their Browsers

When users see Flash, they usually think

the content is probably useless and glitzy
it's likely to be an ad
it's probably not worth waiting for it to download
the webmaster doesn't give a hoot, that half of the visitors never get to see the content

A website that doesn't contain Flash shows its worthwhile content instantly without requiring a Plugin.
Flash sucks for disabled people

Sites that can only be navigated with Flash require the visitor to have functioning eyes and hands
People with limited sight cannot increase the text size to make it legible.
If a site can only be navigated through Flash, people who can't see will not be able to find the Flash navigation menu
If a site can only be navigated through Flash, people with motor disabilities may not be able to move a mouse to a Flash menu and click it
Blind people use screen-readers to visit a site. A reader reads aloud the text on the page. Flash has no text, so the reader sees none of its content, and the blind visitor won't have access to that content.

Even though Flash 8 offers the function to make Flash accessible for disabled people, it still doesn't guarantee that every webmaster is going to update his Flash-content.

Flash will always be a problem for disabled web-users and it sure would be better, if every webmaster used Flash responsibly to make it easier for disabled users to use the web.
Flash sucks for Search Engines

Search engines only see the source code of a Website and Flash has no text. Thus, Search Engines will not return results for a site whose content is embedded in Flash.
Search engines only navigate through links defined in the source code, and Flash has no links of that type. So, search engines will not return results for a site whose inner pages can only be accessed through Flash.

Even though Google has a limited access to Flash within Websites, Flash-Objects themselves are code-wise not that well-structured like HTML-Documents.
This is a big issue, as Google can't find the context of Information stored in Flash within the HTML-Code.
Misused, Flash sucks for Browsers

If misused, Flash breaks our definition of using a Web-Browser.
Functions like going back and forth, copy and pasting and bookmarking won't work within Flash. This shows, that Flash is not only a problem for disabled users, but also in everyday use.

Re: The occupy flash petition

yeah I personally agree to that to a certain extent with the dessert metaphor. I actually remember when it kept persistently asking me to update it but i just declined it every time, there's no point anyway

Re: The occupy flash petition

though some of what you copy & pasted isn't true, for example:

Search engines only see the source code of a Website and Flash has no text. Thus, Search Engines will not return results for a site whose content is embedded in Flash.

I've typed in text from a .swf into a search engine and the .swf came out. it wasn't in the title either, it was embedded IN the flash.

Re: The occupy flash petition

I personally havent tried it, because it costs money to program in flash which is also wrong. (I mean the IDE costs money)

Re: The occupy flash petition

if you don't like flash
don't use it
simple as that
i mean bro
just cuz you and a few others don't like it
doesn't mean you have to stop adobe making most of their money and ruin programmers' fun
sorry man but this is definitely not going to happen

But a canvas doesn't do anything, does it? It's JS they always use to make it work.

Don't get me wrong though, I do like open standards and all, but in practice I've just never been satisfied with how well it works.

A common misconception is that HTML5 can provide animation and interactivity within web pages, which is untrue. Either JavaScript or CSS 3 is necessary for animating HTML elements.
