Re: Square Two Inc. Collab Topic

That's a cool idea, but you would either need a HUGE list of the people who are ignored by who, or a ton of different lists for different peoples ignore lists.

Ok?

Maybe, but that could become a form of cyber-bullying.
Speaking of that, should we make it so that swear words are blocked in chat?

I would give that a definite yes.  My only concern is that, if someone "looks inside" the project, they'll find a neat little collection of words  hmm

By the way the ignor list is temporary and gets reset when you logout. It's not a Cloud Variable.

Speaking of that, we're kind of missing some explicitly minor pieces.  So if anyone (I will have some time soon, so I'll probably do it too) wants to write something that is sad-ish, that would add some nice variety.

My goal is to make it as difficult to narrow down music as possible.  That means we've done our job.

I can make a song like that.

That's a really good point!  There's another problem with building a censor in Scratch as well - Scratch is not a very fast language and it doesn't have very powerful text matching features.  It would be far better if the censor were built-in to Scratch so that inappropriate words were simply removed from cloud variables before they were stored.  Of course, no censor is perfect and people are very clever at finding ways around them, by using alternate spellings or punctuation.

But an imperfect censor is better than no censor at all.  Let me run this problem by some other folks on the Team and see what they think  smile

Of course, the problem then is that when you're storing data as a string of characters, some of your data might be "corrupted" by the censor.  What if, when you make cloud variables, you have the option to turn censorship on/off (with the default "on").

Of course, the problem with this is that people can post projects that circumvent the censor.  It may actually be better to do what you've suggested, and just force people to be a little creative (e.g. not using vowels when storing data, using numbers instead, putting spaces between all the letters, etc.)

Edit: oops, that was kind of a un-directed musing rather than a message xD

Okay, I've made the music. It's supposed to be in a minor key, meaning that it will sound creepy or mysterious. It isn't as good as my last song and not as long. Please give feedback, good or bad.
I will post it soon.

EDIT: Here it is: Scratch music 2.

EDIT: Here it is: Scratch music 2.

It looks like you're in C minor.  I'm a little confused at the "e, g-flat, b" chords (minor chord with a lowered 3rd?).  I'm not sure what kind of music background you have (in terms of music theory), but that really isn't a common chord (major, minor, diminished, seventh, etc.).  It's not that noticeable since the glockenspiel's notes are easily missed, but the dissonance is rather strong, especially as none of the Gs in the other instruments are lowered.

Your chord progression seems to be this:
iv
iii (undefinable)
iv
v

First of all, I'm happy to see that you have a 4 and a 5 chord in there (did you do that intuitively or have you heard that the most common progression is IV,V,I?).

My primary concern is that there is no tonic chord (that is, there is no c-minor chord).  I don't want to make this into a music theory lesson, but you should eventually return to the tonic chord (c-minor in this case), usually after the 5 chord.  What I would do is make the 5 chord you already have a major chord instead, making it harmonic minor (see paragraph below), and then resolve that to the c-minor chord.

There are three types of minor: natural, harmonic, and melodic.
- natural: follows key signature, no sharps, no flats
- harmonic: raises the 7th note of the scale (B in this case), making a major 5 chord that resolves nicely to the tonic.  This is the most common
- melodic: if you're moving up, raise the sixth and seventh scale degrees, otherwise, follow the signature.

Hopefully you can find a few pearls in there.

In the interest of not making this a Music Theory lesson (maybe I should make a thread of music theory basics?), I'm going to stop here.  Bear in mind that these music doesn't have to resolve frequently to the tonic chord (Romantic music frequently tried to distance itself from it), but it's a good guideline to follow.  I can practically guarantee that almost every song you play in band/orchestra class, piano lessons, etc. will resolve to the tonic.  The tonic is a place of rest, and without it, your music feels unrestful and unresolved, and no matter how much you want to hold on to that feeling, you've eventually got to release the tension.

I understood about half of what you said. This music was thrown together mostly randomly (with some theory in mind), and i don't really think that it's that good.

Yeah, i do agree my first one is better. I'm not much of a composer, and I think i'm learning more than I'm composing, which is good (I think.)
I'll try to make my next piece better. Don't bother putting this one in our game.

Well, i'm glad that you did. I learned some from what you said. I was thinking about making it melodic minor, because I personally love how it sounds, but I  felt like that would be too much work.  wink

I've already made the chord progression of my next piece, this time half-minor and half-major.
Like this:
C major, G major, A minor, and E minor

It's based roughly off of Pachelbel's (sorry if it's spelled wrong) canon, but in the key of C and only 4 chords instead of 8.

It's going okay, and please tell me if anything is off with the chord progression, because you know lots more than me.
