Hmm... here is what i got for 3rd person so far, just a draft:
Tabithia stares oddly at the seaweed. The seaweed sways perpetually, brushing against the water, as fish hop up from the sea level, and dive back in. Tabithia has a mind of curiosity, a happiness of the things around her. She sways her feet in the water, just like the seaweed.Hmm... I like it! Kind of like how they wrote it in the Hunger Games, where something happens, yet it is in third person. I like it very much. :3
I changed it a LOT. I might post.
Ooh, cool!

It's fun to start a book out with a mystery.
"Right when he got home, he went to bed. He was tired."
(Not like that, but you want to keep the reader thinking "Who is "he""?)

I sort of like how Rick Riordan wrote the new series (Heroes of Olympus). It's in third person, but it shows the character's thoughts. Still, both third and first person work nicely. Despite what I said above, I'm writing a story in third person, and it's going fine!
Always have suspense to keep the reader reading. At least, that's my suggestion.
If you're going to change over to first person, try not to make many facts directly. When you're writing a fiction story, try not to start with, for example:
My name is John. I am ten years old and I go to school at __________.
Anyway, that's my advice.

How should I begin it? What works better, third or first person? What kind of language? Informal or formal?
Your blimp crashes on the island of the dawn spirits. 2 person. English. Informal.

Instead of writing it in present tense, use past tense

Cool! I like doing third person best. I'm writing a book currently, as well.
~Breeze stormed out the door, the sun's cruel rays beating down on her. "It's unfair!" she snarled to the squirrels around her. They took off at her tone of voice, too familiar with her tantrums. "The world centers around me, and they just want to KILL me for it!" she whimpered, a tear sliding off of her soft furry cheek.~
I prefer that kind of third person, like telling a story about what happened. So fun! ♥
Most animals can't cry. Like, it's physically impossible for most. (The ones that can are elephants and primates, and, of course, humans. Also, the tear would just be absorbed by her fur, unless she is a seal or similar.) Though I'm assuming this is with real animals from the squirrels.

1st Person Diary. From what I've heard from you, each diary entry should be a chapter, where something new happens, an old event has reappeared (between multiple chapters) or something has happened to the character. Those are the main rules for diary-based books.

Most animals don't talk either.

Unless I read the entire book wrong the Hunger Games was in first person.
(And TBH, it was fairly good but I thought it had an overuse of intentional fragments)

I've always found past tense a lot harder than present.

I've always found past tense a bit easier because you don't have to write as if it happening as you speak. I don't read as if it is happening as I read either so I think it works better for me.

Actually, I guess the person comes into it as well (I'm not sure that necessarily made sense) - I'd rather write in past tense if I was writing in third person, but other than that I'd go for present every time. Everyone's different though.

You don't even really need to have the plot before you write.
Close your eyes. Think about your character. Now open your eyes and write whatever comes.
That doesn't work with long proper stories though.

Third person limited all the way for me. I also prefer past tense. Don't do something you really don't like, but at the same time try to get out of your comfort zone. Conflicting advice jukyter!

I usually prefer 1st person.

It does for me. I rarely plan out my stories, and when I do it's just when I'm daydreaming about what could happen next(instead of paying attention in math class ).

Well, Breeze is sort of a mystical scaly dragon-like creature mixed with a cat, so I took a little information from both the mystical creature and the cat and designed her. :]
Oh yeah, and sorry, I don't know why I said third person. I was confused. xD

Yes thrird person is always a good choice for a first novel. But I am nearly finished my first and planning to do my second as a first person.

You can't write a proper 300+ page book by just daydreaming or it'll be a wreck. You need to plan.

Maybe you can't, but that doesn't mean nobody can. I've read several author's books of advice on writing, and all three authors say they don't plan.

If you're planning on writing a series, with Chekov's Guns aplenty, you need to plan. I use your method though.

What is the Genre? And can you give us a brief summary of the story?
Im pretty good with writing. I went to LTUE and have gone to several signings. Im typing this on my kindle, and I listen to Writing Excuses.
(I AM A BOOK WORM BLAHARHAR)
First off, you need to outline your story. That stuf you learn in englush works really.well! xD
Wwrite the main outline and some character sheets. List the main points.of the story. then fill in minor details and add dialogue. It helps toget a friend to edit and review.
It really depends on the Genre if its first or third. They each provide dfferent oppurtunities.
Try downloading Writing Excuses. I think its free and helps a ton. Its a 15 minute long podcast run by A Fantasy, Realistic Fiction and Horror authors and a web comic artist/writer too. Its really funnt and helpful, and you may have seen their styff before. Good luck on the book- sounds really interesting!
P.S. Sorry for the wall of text. I tend to jump at a chance to display to everyone my vast collection of useless knowledge. xD
