I have 1920 * 1080 and I'm lovin it.
Usually, desktop backgrounds will be 1440x900, 1920x1200, or sometimes 2560x1440 so that they resize well for all desktop background sizes.
It's best to use a desktop background resolution that has the same screen ratio as your screen resolution.

The most common sizes I know are 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1920×1080, and 1920x1200

Yes, but the largest common resolution for each screen ratio 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9 is often used because they resize well and can be used for most resolutions.

That would be what I just listed for 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, and 16:10. :I

However, 1440x900 is a larger resolution for 4:3 and you forgot that some displays use 2560x1440.

Maybe it's common, but I've never found a background that fits it.
You can just use 16:9 backgrounds, like 1920x1080, and scale them down

Don't forget 600x800! Windows '95 users have that.

It's uncommon though. And it's not OS based, it's monitor-based.

That's right, although most current OSs will not run well on a 800x600 monitor
