How to Mod your Minecraft Installation

It's something that every Minecraft player should try at some point in his/her gaming life.

For this tutorial we will be installing "Too Many Items" which is a mod that allows you to get items in Singleplayer survival Minecraft.

1. If you have windows, download and install 7-zip. It’s free.
2. For Mac, open  Finder and choose from the menu bar: “Go > Go to folder... > then type in the box — “/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/ and navigate to the minecraft folder.

For Windows users, open start menu and type %Appdata%. Choose the roaming folder in the results and double click the .minecraft folder.

3. Open the minecraft folder and then go to the bin folder.

4. Find minecraft.jar. You should have file appends to be always shown.

5. For Windows: right click the minecraft.jar folder and choose open archive.

6. Unzip the “Too many items” mod folder.

7. Drag the class files from the mod folder to minecraft.jar in 7zip.

8. For Mac: make sure you have all file appends visible. You can change this in Finder preferences.

9. Get an app like The Unarchiver that can unarchive .jar files. Unarchive Minecraft.jar. You should have a folder called Minecraft. Now rename the folder to minecraft.jar. Open minecraft to check that it works. Now drag the class files from the mod folder (should be unzipped) to the minecraft.jar folder.

10. You’re done! Reopen minecraft to see the mod! For some mods, you may have to install modloader so I recommend you install that before installing any other mods.

Nice.

Now try installing BuildCraft. I did everything correct, but whenever I go to page 6 of TMI or the bottom on Creative menu, the game crashes.

maybe you have a conflicting mod, or a texture thing that affects it.

Nope. I did an error check. See my thread on the real site here: http://www.mod-buildcraft.com/forums/to … post-20773

Re: How to Mod your Minecraft Installation

I use and highly recommend SK's Launcher (made by sk89q, who also made WorldEdit et al), which is a replacement for the normal Minecraft launcher that makes installing mods incredibly easy. All you have to do is select the file, and the launcher automagically figures out whether it's a direct mod or a ModLoader mod and installs it accordingly! Plus, thanks to a custom classloader, your minecraft.jar is never actually modified, saving you from corruption havoc! It does a ton of other stuff too, but the mod-installing capabilities are what I wanted to plug here because they're relevant.  smile

Sorry if that seemed a bit spammy, but seriously, this launcher is awesome! It makes mod installing incredibly painless.  big_smile

Re-install TMI on top.  NEI and TMI both crash if a new mod is installed after them.

You can actually unarchive .jars very easily-they use the zip file format

Yes, most unarchivers will unarchive them.

They use .zip? Never knew, although I guessed  tongue  Thanks  smile

Ah, that explains why they didn't work when I renamed to .zip xD

So I can tarball them and rename as .jar? Sounds very convenient.

are you sure?  Unzipping works fine for me, and this says so as well
But, there is a note that it isn't exactly backwards-compatible - you can rename a .jar to a .zip and unzip it, but not the other way around unless the manifest is first I think

Hmm, my source must have been wrong. It did work both ways for me though.
