Scratch is not scripting - it's legos meets coding. The underlying engine is squeak.

yea I know but underneath the blocks is scripting and I want to know what type of scripting that is.

That is correct. Scratch is programmed completely in Squeak. I've given it a hand myself, though I've never really gotten too terribly good at it. If you want to learn, this tutorial is absolutely amazing.
