I had a virus that used to be a zero-day threat; it made it so I got a popup window that had an error on it that brought me out to the login screen. I had to wait several months for avast or Malwarebytes to recognize it. Out of curiosity, any idea what it was?

Apparently the first ever virus was made by MIT students.
I've never got one.

Uh, no?
The first virus, called Creeper, was made at BBN Technologies.

Wasn't the Morris Worm first? From what I heard, it was made at a different university but then released at MIT.

Wrong. Christmas Tree EXEC, Brain, SCA, Ping-Pong, Elk Cloner, ANIMAL, Wabbit and Creeper came first.
Cascade + Techno + Pingpong = EPIC WIN !

I don't believe in any anti virus software, I think it's an expensive program that tells you when you download something.
It's easier to just be careful about what you download and see on the Internet.

Yeah, because millions of people would download a scam and give it extremely high ratings. How can it be expensive when some of the best ones are free? Take AVG, for example.
