You can't characterize the entire site from one problem. Most likely it was a hacked advertisement on the page you were on. With XSS they can create little links anywhere, even invisible ones, that can do things like trigger downloads, turn on your webcam, etc.
Inform the management of Deviantart,
they have to change their Ad-provider and investigate the current.
In the meantime just use Firefox and install the following addons
- Adblock plus ( offers an option to allow non intrusive Ads )
- Noscript
