How come loads of Mario and other copy-write games can be allowed to be front paged via top-loves/ views but if for example my Rayman game wanted to be featured it would not be allowed to be featured because of copy-write material when there are other ways to get it front paged anyway?

If a game's got copy-write material in it, people are goanna see it anyway, so why can't it be featured? Scratch Team won't get in trouble for it, as any curator could do the same with that project, except for not as long of a period. Or, would they go to every single scratcher who loved or viewed that project, because they got it into the top viewed/loved category?

It's "copyright", not "copy-write".

It sounds like you're confused about the Featured slot of the front page in comparison to the rest of the other front page slots. The Featured slot is controlled by the Scratch Team, all the other slots (except the curator slot) is community controlled.

Those Scratch projects which uses a very large amount of copyrighted material, such as those Mario projects that you mentioned, are just as incapable of hitting the Featured slot much like your Rayman project. However, your Rayman game is still capable of getting on the front page through any other means such as Top Loved or Top vVewed just like any other game that uses copyrighted material; it's just a matter of luck and popularity.

As for the reason why projects with large amounts of copyrighted material can never hit the Featured slot: it's just a preference. tongue

so what you're saying is the only way I'd have any chance is if I replaced every single piece of music, sound effect and costume with something of my own creation, before it would be accepted?

hmmm... I've got too much coursework to do all that at the moment. if it's merely a preference, surely you wouldn't mind a rayman game on there? it's very rarely been programmed before on scratch because of how complex he is with all his different moves. if not, I'll see how much I can get replaced in my spare time.

It's not like Mario or those Pony things or Zelda which I bet is on the front page ALL the time.

Pretty much. Or you could use material covered by a permissive license like CC or RF. Sometimes a project gets featured where the music might be copyrighted, but not overly too much.

But even then, there's a lot more aspects to be considered when the Scratch Team picks a project to feature (such as if it shows off an innovated use of Scratch, is the project or project user too well-known already, is it acceptable for all ages, etc.); so there's no guarantee that even if you replaced all the content that it will get featured.

Actually, I haven't seen that many. The popular trend nowadays is usually Sonic, animals like cats and wolves, anime, and Minecraft. I've seen only one or two references to Mario lately. I think you're blowing the front page issue a bit too much out of proportion. hmm

Yes it is. RF is shorthand for "Royalty Free". In case anyone else is confused, "CC" is shorthand for "Creative Commons". smile

minecraft- top loved (there are six more if you click "see more")
