Don't know if you're kidding or not, but some people like rugby and you don't have to say "rugby sucks" right to their face, especially when they're new. It's rude. *shakes head disapprovingly*

Well I'm not kidding in that I do think it sucks, but I was only stating my opinion...

This is a forum section is for welcoming New Scratchers and helping them out. You certainly have you opinion about rugby, but this is not the place to be posting about it as it comes off as rude and unwelcoming towards iloverugbywow here.

Well perhaps it could've led to an interesting discussion about why rugby is/isn't better than other sports, which might actually make them feel more welcomed than if all they got was "hi", since they'd actually be having a proper discussion.
...I'll edit it. >.>

And that would be a discussion better suited for the Reading and Playing forum, not here as such a discussion would derail the topic from being a welcoming one.
You may have edited the original comment, but think twice about what you post and where you post it in the future. People have an opinion about what they like or not like, but it shouldn't be rudely thrusted into the face of a new member if all that new member wants to do is say hello.

So we're not allowed to say anything other than "hi" without it being classed as off-topic...? I personally think in the New Members forum we should be able to have conversations with the thread owner about likes/dislike etc., since like I said, they'll feel like they're part of the community more if they're debating with other users and if people are talking to them about things they like.
And I guess I should've put "I don't enjoy rugby but that's just my opinion", but I still don't see how this near-flame war came about over something as little as that. But yeah, sorry for posting so rudely and stuff.

Yes. This forum section is for welcoming New Scratchers, so it's mostly for giving advice to New Scratcher, if not just for saying something along the lines of "Hello and welcome to the community". When the welcome threads start to go beyond the welcoming point, it's becomes more of a chat thread and usually ends up getting closed as it has done so in the past. New members are still free to come to the Reading and Playing forum or the Making and Playing forum is they want to talk about a non-Scratch related topic as New Scratcher forum section is not the place for it.
And I guess I should've put "I don't enjoy rugby but that's just my opinion", but I still don't see how this near-flame war came about over something as little as that. But yeah, sorry for posting so rudely and stuff.
Well, actually, it really shouldn't have been mentioned at all, it was rather somewhat rude (if not off topic). It's like saying "I don't like anime" on a welcome topic posted by some named animefangurl200, or "I don't like Sonic" on a topic" an a welcome topic posted by SonicFan44. Such comments more of a direct attack on the name than anything and is seen as a more as an unwelcoming statement. Again, you're free to your own opinion, but the New Scratchers forum section is for welcoming and helping new Scratchers, so such comments around here should be geared towards that goal.
-> On a side note, it isn't me who should be receiving the apology, it really should be directed at iloverugbywow. After all, it's his/her thread, all he/she wants is a nice welcome from community members such as yourself.

Okay, got it, but I still disagree with the off-topic bit. Let's leave it there though, arguing with a ST member isn't the smartest thing to do. :p
And the apology was sort of to both of you.
