SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Scratch has been working fine until today. I went to open it and it came up with the message- "SQUEAK: Please select an image file". It wanted me to select a picture. I uninstalled it and re-installed it but I had the same problem. Please help me, thanks.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Hi luke, Are you running Scratch on Windows, because I don't know about Mac?

That message usually comes up if you have more than one file ending with '*.image* in your Scratch program folder. There are three things you might try:

1. open the Scratch program folder and manually delete all files ending with '*.image' except the one file named 'scratch.image' (you can also rename the 'image' ending to something else if you're afraid to delete anything; just make sure there's only one file ending with *.image in the Scratch directory).

2. deinstall Scratch, *then manually remove the Scratch program folder* (because the deinstaller will not remove any *.image files that got in there by accident), and then reinstall Scratch.

3. You can also select the file 'scratch.image' in the dialog requesting you to specify an 'image' each time.

BTW an 'image' file is *not* a 'picture' but a Squeak image, which is actually part of the executable stuff.

Hope that helps
-Jens

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Same thing happened to me after I started playing around with BYOB.

Even when I pick out the right Scratch .image, the program opens but then it crashes.

I've tried reinstalling.  I'll post again if I come up with a solution.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Happens to me with Panther all the time. I think we have to make sure there is only 1 image file in the whole folder, including subfolders.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

I was able to get Scratch up and running again.

I learned that when you start messing around under the hood (by playing with Mesh or modding blocks) you risk making Scratch unstable, even after it has been reinstalled. Try to study up before you get started with the advanced stuff.  That way you'll understand what you're doing, and how to undo it.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Old thread from 2007 alert!

But the glitch has happened ever since SQUEAK existed. Even before scratch, but you get the point. Reinstalling usually gets the problem fixed.

.image does not mean a picture, it means the scratch image, it holds all the information from the system browser. (Squeak Smalltalk (what Scratch is programmed by) uses a system browser)

If you are reading this, please read to the end, because if you don't you won't know what's at the end. Don't just skip to the end though otherwise you won't be able to read the middle, which is most important. Now you must be wondering why you just read all that, the reason is you may have not noticed something, read it again and see if you notice it this time  smile

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Hello...

I also can use some help.  I have already done the cycle of 1) un-install, 2) delete the Scratch folder, and 3) re-install a couple of times, yet with still the same issue, "Squeak: Please select an image file...".

I just want to be able to double-clik on a ".sb" file directly, thus causing Scratch to automatically start with this selected filed loaded.  Currently, it will load a default blank program instead, once the correct image is manually selected.

And once I can get pass this one issue, Scratch works likes a charm.   smile   jay

Open a project saved on your hard drive. That will open scratch without having to select an image file.

It's not really necroposting if the topic still applies.  Splodgey, are you having trouble with this problem?  If you are, I suggest that you reinstall Scratch, that usually fixes the problem.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

Just select "scratch.image" from the folder every time. No biggie.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

@Paddle2See
I am having the same problem, when I re install Scratch, it works once, then messes up.  Also, when I click Scratch.image it says:

Image file read problem (0 out of 4 bytes read)

And Scratch.image is the only image file in my Scratch folder.

(see my first line after @Paddle2See before reading on)

As you can think, I don't want to re install Scratch every time I use it.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

@James07

You may need to get a new image from the files-only version. Seems your one is corrupted.

Re: SQUEAK: Please select an image file

We (users at this school) get this glitch 'SQUEAK: Please select an image file'.
Scratch launches OK if we just launch Scratch - but if a user clicks on any *.sb file then the system wants an image file. Selecting scratch.image from the program directory launches the app but just the vanilla version: without the "*.sb" sprites, code and stage that the user was trying to open.
We have found a workaround: start scratch then drag the *.sb file onto the stage - it loads then correctly.
Still - it would be nice to find a fix.
OS is Windows 7. Scratch v1.4
Any suggestions anyone?
