Dual Booting

Talk about dual booting here! What are you dual booting? Do you need help dual booting? Just post your questions here.

So, what is dual booting?

Wikipedia wrote:

Multi-boot or Multi-booting is the act of installing multiple operating systems on a computer, and being able to choose which one to boot when starting the computer. The term dual-booting refers to the common configuration of specifically two operating systems. Multi-booting may require a custom boot loader.

Sounds interesting. What can I dual boot?
You can dual boot pretty much any operating system. The most popular is probably ubuntu, and is also a good place to start. It's fast, and really easy to install.

So what is this ubuntu?
Pros: It's fast
Easy to install
It's free
Open Source Software
Anti Virus (Ubuntu is practically virus proof)

Cons: Bit complex (A lot of things are done through a command line, called the terminal)

I want ubuntu!! How do I install it?
This is one of my favorite operating systems for beginners, because it's so easy. All it is, is an exe that you just have to download and install. You can get the exe HERE!
Installing Java/Flash on ubuntu
Installing basic applications on ubuntu
Ubuntu Website

Wait, why did you stop there? I want more?
Hold your horses there. I'm still writing. Just give me a chance. (Yeash!)

If you see anything inaccurate, please let me know.

Also, if you have a fix to the vm workstation, where the error "TheThe CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine", please let me know.

I don't want to have to use a dual layer dvd. Might as well just buy the osx disk from apple. Also, yes I am creating a hackintosh. What I'm going to do is pick up a 16 gig thumb drive. They're around 15 bucks, and anyways. I'll be using if for TONS more things. I just need to figure out how to put the iso on it.

You might want to grab iBoot from tonymacx86 if you wanna boot that....

I'm doing that RIGHT now. The only thing is, I heard it's only for mac. Is this true?

The OS is only for mac, however, using iBoot, you can actually boot it on a windows machine.

But that says you need an 8 gig disk. I don't have an 8 gig disk. I was following This guide. It appears to use a thumb drive instead, and doesn't require the mac osx boot disk. My only problem is it appears to use a mac to put the iso on the thumb drive.

Re: Dual Booting

Another problem I'm having, is when I try and run osx in vmware, it starts to work PERFECTLY! I get the apple logo, and the little swirly loading thingy, and then after around a half hour, to an hour, I get the following error: "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine.". Any suggestions?

Re: Dual Booting

So, what I was thinking, is I get mac working on vmware, then I have a mac, that I can then use UniBeast and MultiBeast to put the iso on a thumb drive.  big_smile  Ta-da! Would that work? How would I fix the error I'm having with vmware?

Re: Dual Booting

You could....

I have an idea.

Try and get it working in vmware, go into finder and copy the entire harddrive`s contents. Put that on a usb stick and transfer the stuff from the usb stick to a partition on your REAL harddrive.

Ah. Ok, so when I have it on the partition, then can I like boot from the partition?

Well, you probably will need to have the partition using the Mac OSX format.

I have no idea how I would do that. Well, first things first. How do I fix this stupid error? "the CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point."

I know why
Its because apple make it so if you don't have a apple mac it will not run
In order for you to make it work you need to trick the  OS into thinking its a mac
Have you choosing mac os x as the guest os when setting the VM up?

Re: Dual Booting

Best of luck!  However, just copying everything in finder won't give you an installable copy of os x...

Edit: I think I'm onto something here. Hold on.

I'm kind of confused. First I looked at something that said I needed a mac to put the iso onto the usb stick, and I saw something else that said I can just drag and drop the iso into my thumb drive, another one that said I need poweriso to put it on, and another one said I just had to use a program like winzip to extract the iso onto the thumb drive. Anyone want to help me out here?

Well, it may be possible that if you extract the ISO you will get all the files needed for OSX. Set the USB to have a bootable flag and try to boot it from USB. If not, try and see of you can restart a legit Mac (Many schools have old macs) to see if it works on the different hardware.
