Hacking and Modding

Before you close this topic, can we talk it over?

What are the latest things you want to, and are hacking? Post any tutorials here to hack your computer, video game consols, and more! Don't post anything illegal, or that could get you banned from scratch.

I'm trying to do my research to see what is legal, and what is not. I'll try and post as much info as I can. Try to stay away from talking about illegal modding/hacking.

Here's a list of what I found about modding/hacking:

Original Xbox
"Not illegal, but it obviously voids the warranty & in the case of the Xbox, Microsoft may be able to detect a modded console being used & ban your gamertag forever"

"Its not illegal but if it had live anymore then MS would ban you. You will NOT get thrown in jail for it. Its just as legal as jailbreaking an ipod."
So, from what I can tell, it's alright, and microsoft probably wouldn't take a whole lot of legal action, unless you were like making money off of it or something.

Ipod Touch
"U.S. Declares iPhone Jailbreaking Legal, Over Apple’s Objections"

So, I guess technically it's legal.

Wii
"Hacking your own wii is generally not illegal. I will however void the warranty. It may also be illegal if you are using it to break copyright law."

Again, it's probably fine. It does however, like most hacks, voids your warranty.

Xbox 360
"It violates the Xbox LIVE Code of Conduct and will lead to a console ban. But modding a controller isn't, but other countries have different laws."

I'm not responsible for any damage you do to your console, or any trouble you get into. Please don't take bad advantages when hacking.

Re: Hacking and Modding

(I had a long rant, but then I accidentally deleted it beyond hope of undoing, so I'll just cut the to point)

The following was taken from the document "How to be a Hacker".

What Is a Hacker?

The Jargon File contains a bunch of definitions of the term ‘hacker’, most having to do with technical adeptness and a delight in solving problems and overcoming limits. If you want to know how to become a hacker, though, only two are really relevant.

There is a community, a shared culture, of expert programmers and networking wizards that traces its history back through decades to the first time-sharing minicomputers and the earliest ARPAnet experiments. The members of this culture originated the term ‘hacker’. Hackers built the Internet. Hackers made the Unix operating system what it is today. Hackers run Usenet. Hackers make the World Wide Web work. If you are part of this culture, if you have contributed to it and other people in it know who you are and call you a hacker, you're a hacker.

The hacker mind-set is not confined to this software-hacker culture. There are people who apply the hacker attitude to other things, like electronics or music — actually, you can find it at the highest levels of any science or art. Software hackers recognize these kindred spirits elsewhere and may call them ‘hackers’ too — and some claim that the hacker nature is really independent of the particular medium the hacker works in. But in the rest of this document we will focus on the skills and attitudes of software hackers, and the traditions of the shared culture that originated the term ‘hacker’.

There is another group of people who loudly call themselves hackers, but aren't. These are people (mainly adolescent males) who get a kick out of breaking into computers and phreaking the phone system. Real hackers call these people ‘crackers’ and want nothing to do with them. Real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesn't make you a hacker any more than being able to hotwire cars makes you an automotive engineer. Unfortunately, many journalists and writers have been fooled into using the word ‘hacker’ to describe crackers; this irritates real hackers no end.

The basic difference is this: hackers build things, crackers break them.

Somehow, hackers are becoming a positive image of a master programmer ._.

Re: Hacking and Modding

really the word "Hack" has kinda been lost.

to "Hack" is to create a program though it is used in place of ''crack'' meaning to break into a program.

"Hacking" at first was a scary thought meaning breaking into computers to obtain money and private info.

in the modern world "hacking'' still has that meaning to an extent but simple task such as guessing you friends password to Facebook is considered "Hacking"

Re: Hacking and Modding

So, I just got a free xbox. Anyone know how to hack it? I need to get another controller because I think there is some exploit I can run, but I need to be able to connect a memory card through the computer, so I need to attach USB to the original controller. Can anyone help me with anything from there?

Hackers make stuff better by "Hacking" stuff together.

Ask me what I'm doing, wait an hour than roll a die, if it's 4-6, I'm playing Skyrim, if it's 1, I'm eating, if it's 2-3 I'm programming.

I'm sorry, but the author of that obviously doesn't realize that websites are run on Linux. Nor does the author realize that the books he mentioned ("Hackers" and "Programming With Perl") are educational books and they teach you about the history of hackers. My Dad bought those books, read them, and encourages me to read them. Though learning to program in Perl or reading the history of the Hackers is tough to get through.

My Dad, Mom, siblings, and I all play Quake together. He doesn't encourage it, but he doesn't discourage it either. Though I can see why some parents would ban games like it. But hacking is not the reason.

There is a huge list of "Hackers are the reason you have...", a couple are "Hackers are the reason you have multiple accounts on your computer", and "Hackers are the reason anything in this world is secure."

The "Hackers" book explains a ton of the history of computers (those computers that took entire rooms). I personally think Hackers created the first multiplayer video game.

But anyways, that article is inaccurate.

Lol at least some people on the site have common sense, in the poll ("why do you hate computer hackers") the majority voted for "they smell bad..."

Edit: I saw this a while ago and posted about it. On reading it again, I have a few points to make.

1.) the category for the post is "Internet idiocy." I think it is a Colbert-style satire where the writer takes on the role of the person who they are making fun of.

2.) This is another complaint I have, and found myself defending Apple on this too. The writer claims that AMD processors are made in third world countries (obviously false considering the conditions required to make such a precise machine) and sweatshops, unlike Intel's chips, which they claim are American. Really? Sure, AMD probably does abuse foreign labor. But so does every other major computer manufacturer in the world. (my same case with Apple)

3. Intel does not have anti-hacking measures on the chip. 'Nuff said.

4. 30 minutes a day on a computer is nothing. Also, the writer has a fundamental misunderstanding of what a DoS attack is. A DoS attack in no way involves getting access to the server's console. (Terminal, really, since it is running on "Lunix")

5. Quake. It's a game. It isn't a "virtual training ground" for hackers. You don't learn how to use firearms by clicking the LMB, and if your child thinks you reload by hitting the RMB then they don't have a chance anyway. Here's something new: they are not antisocial. They are social with people who understand them. They may be thousands of miles away, but what does that matter? They are friends, and that's that.

6. Foul language? Have you ever stepped inside a public school? If everyone who uses foul language at someone they disagree with (nearly everyone between the ages of 10-25) is a hacker, it's time to be afraid.

7. I won't even comment on reason 8

8."Hackers tend to dress in bright, day-glo colors. They may wear baggy pants, bright colored shirts and spiky hair dyed in bright colors to match their clothes. They may take to carrying "glow-sticks" and some wear pacifiers around their necks." All I can say is what the actual [bleeeeeeeep]

9. If you can't do well in school, you are either a script kiddie (a disgrace to the hacker name) or absolutely no threat to anyone who graduated high school.

10. The stupidity is too great to come from someone who is legitimately a parent. The whole thing was fake.

Nice, Hackintosh.  smile  I'll just give my two cents in that a desktop Hackintosh is cool and good, but there isn't really a better quality laptop than a legit Macbook, if you can afford it. Of course, the Apple Tax is extremely high.  tongue

Exactly what I was thinking. Anyway, it didn't work. I'm getting the following error: "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine". I was thinking of just dual booting. I have the iso and everything, but I just don't have an 8gb cd-r laying around anywhere. Any suggestions?
