Well, thankfully the virtual machine error fixed itself, but now when I start minecraft there are missing lines. In-game, the terrain doesn't show up at all or random bits don't. When it does, the terrain overlaps with the next tile, and there is a see-through line at the side. It also does a similar thing with any other java related game. Something with java?

Maybe your version of Java isn't supported by your computer...
What OS and hardware do you have?

Totally uninstall java. Then download the latest version of the JRE and re-install(download a 32 bit version). Or maybe it's a problem with your minecraft. In that case delete it & the minecraft bin folder. Then re download minecraft and try again :3

Have totally un-installed it. Downloaded the latest version and reinstalled it (yes, 32bit). Tried deleting bin and .minecraft as was suggested to me by my friend. Also force updated. Nope, nothing works! At least it actually starts.

Ok i'm kidding. Maybe you have a virus or something...
Do a scan
Actually, Macs have a new selection of malware coming from an exploit in Java...

Yeah. Macs are losing their virus-immunity. The fact that the new version of Mac OS X will ship with a basic antivirus should show that enough, even without considering the growing number of Mac malware.
But yeah, run an antivirus scan.

ESET usually goes hysterical if it finds anything remoteley suspicious. It always does startup scans. I honestly have no idea. I'll try it though.

It could be that your minecraft world is corrupt. Did you try starting a new world? If that one looks fine, then the world may be corrupt and there's not much you can do.
For those of you worried about world corruption you can (in windows)
start > run
then enter %appdata% in the run window. It will open your browser
follow the filepath .minecraft\saves\
This folder contains one folder per world. If you zip your world up and date the zip file you will have a backup world!
