finding sprite files?

seems like it's really hard to find sprite files except from inside the scratch program.  separate costumes are not separate files?  i edited a costume and clicked okay but had to turn my laptop off without quitting scratch and shutting down and when i opened the program up the next time, all my editing work is gone.
scratch is different from most other programs i use in how stuff is stored.   i don't understand the file structure.
that's a lot of questions i guess.

If you turn off without saving, then you will lose everything, there are 2 ways to not have this happen:
1. Save scratch before you quit.
2. If you just want the sprite to be saved, right click on the sprite underneath the field where you can play your game an stuff, and do export.
It sorta stinks that that happens, scratch has crashed several times for me, and I don't save often enough >.<
