Re: mathematical equations

*simultaneously makes first post in topic, and bumps*

SED is temporarily abandoned while I move onto new areas, such as AI with pathfinding, individual reactions, and group communication.  More complex projects are also brewing.

Re: mathematical equations

Nobody will ever solve this one...
x=1+x
Find x

Find x

x = 1+x
x^2 = (1+x)^2
x^2 = 1 + 2x + x^2
(cancel x^2)
0 = 1 + 2x
2x = -1
x =-.5

There's an answer  smile ...I might have cheated, but it's an answer  smile .

Re: mathematical equations

Does the answer have to do with the number becoming positive when you square it?

I don't see anything wrong with it...maybe I'm not looking hard enough  tongue

Isn't the answer infinity?

Yes. Although technically no actually, since you can have different "levels" of infinity.

Re: mathematical equations

I'm taking a physics gifted education class, and I'm really enjoying it  smile
My favorite part is the math problems. They're actually pretty easy because when you think about it, they're really just multiplication and division.

Re: mathematical equations

I was gonna guess infinity.. But then that poses the question, what is infinity-infinity?  One way of thinking would suggest infinity.  The other; 0.

Re: mathematical equations

Infinity-infinity should equal infinity as it is not a variable with a set amount, it is a concept of an impossibly large number. Or something like that...
