I use mcpatcher without HD installed and OptiFine installed, so yeah, MCPatcher is OK if you don't install HD

2. Pretty easy.
3. Completely free.

However, it might be a good idea to hit a creeper if it's already going towards you.
DO NOT HIT PIGMEN
You will be swarmed
DO NOT HIT WOLVES
Wolves and the surrounding wolves become rabid when hit
YOU WILL EITHER BE SWARMED OR ATTACKED BY AN ANGRY WOLF WHICH IS HARD TO KILL

The things he listed are all bad. Pigmen and wolves only attack you when you attack them. As for creepers I don't know why he said not to hit them.

And please buy it soon. I wanna play it with you. :3
