Why is flash only available to members?

i know that flash is fairly new, but surely we don;t have to hide it from the outside world? yes it encourages people to join, but all they do is play games with the flash player. really JAVA should be available to members, and FLASH be the optional one if we had to choose from the two.

Re: Why is flash only available to members?

Considering the Flash Player has improved a lot, I agree, it should be available to non-members.  smile  Java is currently available to both members and non-members, of course.

I thought it was because it was still in testing…

Yeah, that was indeed the original idea! However, given that we've helped fix so many bugs and that it could now be considered superior to the Java player, the two players should switch roles (Java becoming optional and Flash becoming the default).

Re: Why is flash only available to members?

Seems like a good idea, but FLASH is one of those incentives that make you want to get a Scratch account.

Yes, but that means that a lot of people would join but not make any projects or post anything on the Forums.

But they have a 0% chance of making projects and posting in forums when they don't have an account. If they make an account, they may realize how cool Scratch really is and start making projects.  smile

Re: Why is flash only available to members?

Don't forget that lots of Scratchers don't program for the flash player. Some games that work fine on the Java Player, don't work at all in the Flash Player. The games made to use the speed of the flash player usually can't work in the java player, but the number of these projects is way lower than the number of java projects

Re: Why is flash only available to members?

I don't think using the Flash Player to force people to make accounts was the original intent, and if it is being use that way, I don't really approve.   hmm

Actually, people can make projects without an account.

Both should be available for everyone. Why don't you make a suggestion about it?  smile
